Anyway, I was reminded of a conversation I had with a friend of mine had in 2008, around the time Santigold's self-titled and M.I.A.'s Kala came out, where he told me that he liked the Santigold record more than the M.I.A. record. I wanted to choke him lifeless on the spot (remember, this was before she hooked up with Rusko, released that horrid Maya album and then got exposed in the New York Times). As I told him, Santigold's record is only great if you've listened to 10 reggae records in your lifetime. Otherwise, it's just a decent indie record. Simply kind of meh.
I actually liked Diplo's Top Billing mixtape/Santigold remix album more than the self titled album itself. But that's just me .
I never felt like she was trying to do ANY kind of reggae album on her self titled, so that comparison to me makes absolutely no sense, I accept it for what it was with her making her own music.
Top Billing was an offshoot and to be honest I liked it much more then the album probably because I grew up with dancehall music and it has that heavy reggae influence.
I don't think theres need shyt on her, she mixes she produces she's a black woman making the music she loves without it being completely wack, and I respect her for it
