man the way I see people in the Lauri thread hyping up Lance Jr., Im wondering if he wouldn't have fit perfectly on this roster? happy either way with the return
we're like a month away from media day
I've been seeing this a lot but I think DJJ is actually a better fit for us than Nance.
Remember Jeremi Grant on the Nuggetts? He's AK's ideal 4 man. That's clear to me. DJJ can play the 4 in a similar fashion while also being a great perimeter defending option to throw out there. Let's face it, most teams are only playing 1 big man out there, and perimeter guys that can also provide weak side rim protection are valuable. PW and DJJ are the 4 rotation for this year. If you think of Vucevic like Jokic, it makes perfect sense.
DJJ can guard more positions than Nance. His shot doesn't look that bad and seems to be improving % wise. He brings a ton of energy and entertainment. Idk I really like this. I always thought he was great on the Heat. I legit think he might push PW for minutes at some points.
I've followed the Nuggets' team building for fantasy purposes for a few years now and they've always (since Jokic arrived) been very intriguing. They (AK) never worried about traditional roles for different players at different sizes and positions. Jokic forced them to think outside the box and I think AK learned a lot in that process.
I think he saw the value of having a very skilled center that can pass and shoot 40% from 3. It allows you to have a non-shooter at a different position. This means you can have a great perimeter defender on the floor that's not a great shooter but provides value elsewhere. Most teams basically have to accept that their 5 man won't be a floor spacer and therefore they need to rely on the guys 1-4 to be floor spacers. But that limits their talent pool because a guy like DJJ probably shouldn't be on the floor with a non-shooting 5 (At least not starting, probably fine in bench units). But with a non-shooting 5 he can be out there and do his thing. He provides a lot, especially for a team whose main stars aren't that good at defense.
I think he saw that it's possible to have a good defense without a traditional rim protecting C on the floor. Other guys can fill in the gaps, and schemes can help a lot (Donovan is a pretty good defensive schemer.) Starting in 2016-17 (Jokic's 2nd season) the Nuggets' defensive ranks have been 29th, 23rd, 10th, 16th, 11th. If the Bulls can keep the defense in the low teens while also having a potent offense, they'll be tough for anyone to beat.
The way I think this is going to go is Derozan will be the primary pick and roll guy, Vuc will set the pick, Lonzo, Lavine and PW will space the floor. Throughout the game BD will intersperse good defenders like DJJ, TBJ, Ayo, and Caruso. One of Zach, Derozan, and Vuc will always be on the floor to score. So we'll see lineups like
Lonzo/Caruso/Ayo/DJJ/Vuc
Coby/Zach/Derozan/PW/Bradley
Caruso/Zach/PW/DJJ/Vuc
mix and match guys depending on size and matchups. We're basically relying on PW and DJJ to be somewhat good rim protectors. PW is 6'8" with a 7 foot wing span and DJJ is I think like 6'8" with a a 7 foot wingspan and can literally fly. I'm not too worried.
Derozan and Zach are going to have to improve their defense for us to contend, and I don't think that's impossible. They will both have to carry less of an offensive load, and both seem willing to buy into the team. It's not like they're not athletic enough to stay in front of their man, they just need to get their help defense up to par.
At the end of the day this will be an extremely fun team to watch, and that's all that matters. This shyt is just entertainment. I think AKME have already shown themselves to be great composers, it's been a joy watching them write this song. Hopefully it'll be even more enjoyable to watch the players play the song. I see the vision and I fukk with it.
