all this talk about southern support and all that. no limit was huge everywhere. alot of people on this board who either werent around, or aint been nowhere, seem to group them in as some sort of regional act, when in fact, theyre the ones who ended all that southern regional chit.

people are glossing over the fact that no limit was a NATIONAL phenomenon. theyre the ones who blew the south up into what it is today and str8 penetrated the east coast.

dont be listening to these nut ass hermits in here reppin the east coast. yea, no limit had alot of haters up here but they had tons of fans.

no limit kicked the doors down for the south and for rappers in general to get their business together. changed the game on both fronts. those are the main two things that should be highlighted whenever no limit comes up in a convo.

Outside of P, Silkk, Mia, Mystikal, and obviously Snoop, the rest of the tank were regional and local acts. Those five artists were moreso mainstays.

The whole regional thing was coming to an end before No Limit really took off. No Limit really didn't end that.

no it wasnt. especially not for the south. there was no interest in the southern market before no limit. you dont want to hear this cuz youre from the south BUT IM TELLING YOU as someone who is from up-top and lived this chit. yall owe all yall chit to master p.

as for the 1st comment, they were the stars(and you left out c-murder) but we were checking for alot of the supporting cast as well.
for example, mr magic versus fiend was a pretty common argument.......which brings me back to your comment in the bolded. you couldnt get those types of arguments about southern rappers on the east coast before no limit. let alone a debate over a couple of southern b-teamers.

This simply isn't true. There was definitely interest in the Southern market before No Limit took off. Why do you think No Limit switched from the Bay making West Coast Bad Boy compilations to making Down South Hustler compilations in 1995? Why do you think the Tank went from pre-dominantly produced K-Lou and DJ Darryl songs to BBTP? P saw the market Down South and went from West Coast centric to Southern centric music. Scarface was platinum before No Limit blew. Kast went platinum twice before No Limit blew. Eightball & MJG were gold. Goodie Mob was gold.

C-Murder was not a star. Fiend vs. Magic arguments only existed if you were a fan of No Limit. This would be different if people were making Fiend vs DMX arguments, but they weren't. Which brings me back to the point about C-Murder, C wasn't sought after and you weren't going to hear a C-Murder verse unless you bought a No Limit album.

I'm not even sure Def Jam had this many releases in a 3 year period.. Not sure of the sales numbers being accurate... But the number of people who were able to drop and the gaps between was like 6 weeks. You was buying that NO LIMIT ALBUM no matter who was on the cover... and they was 8.99 when nikkas shyt was 14.99 and up

I wish more people would speak the truth. How many times did Jay Z shout out Master P on songs..

Y'all gonna learn july 29

P had the game on lock and was so focused

If Diddy or a Mase or whoever big was coming out..

P would drop his album or another A list rapper before or on the same week and then drop another A/B list rapper two weeks later..

He was attacking rappers in that manner..

You had a Diddy or someone coming out on Dec 4th, P would drop a Mystikal album or Silkk, Snoop or himself on that same day and then hit you again with a C murder or Fiend or compilation album on Dec 19th
That would stagger tha Diddy or whoever albums that came out on Dec 4th

Everybody is coping both of those NL releases

Steady Mobbin moved close to 800k with no radio play or video on BET.

Think about tha for a minute. When Outkast was selling a million with many videos and features and was on a major with a big budget

No Steady Mobb'n album moved close to 800K.

No Limit artists didn't need the videos and they were selling albums because each album was like a compilation promoting the roster. In addition, the entire roster had ads in each of those albums. You knew what an album looked like and essentially what the artist looked like after hearing them on the album. That was the genius of No Limit. Who needs radio or video play when millions just heard you on a Snoop album, saw your album advertised inside the booklet to Snoop's album, and then picked up a mag at the store and saw a spread for it in said magazine. No Limit had the best promo without having to spend the money on promo. No other labels were doing that. Imagine La Face throwing OutKast and Goodie Mob on Toni Braxton and Isher albums and you open the booklets and you see the album covers for Aquemini and Still Standing coming soon. They don't even need a video at that point because millions of people just heard them on those albums and are now checking for those album covers on the shelves.

The breh posted their stats.

How many albums do you think they moved on their first album if it wasn't close to 800k?

I'm not understanding the NL artists did not need videos angle? Snoop album came out in 98, there were albums that came out before then?

Outkast and Goodie Mob were on a Major label, being blasted around the world, NL artists did not get the same shine as an Outkast and Goodie Mob, hell Outkast was on Martin at Martin peak.

So you're saying NL artist got more promo than LaFace artists?

Steady Mobbin got more promo than Outkast?

Soulja Slim wasn't on that many songs with NL before his album came out, many outside of NOLA, let alone the south, really knew who this dude was and he hit Gold or platinum with his debut album... with 1 video that rarely got played.

Breh, everybody knows that these Wiki "stats" are bogus.

I don't know how many units they moved on their first album, but it wasn't no 800K. Steady Mobb'n was not even THAT big of a deal on the tank. They were hardly featured on No Limit albums as it was.

I used Snoop as an example. The point is No Limit was cross promotion heavy.

No Limit didn't need that type of exposure because they had artists NO ONE had ever heard of featured on platinum albums with ads inside the booklets of those platinum albums.

Think about all the hype of a new album: album covers, tracklist, features, production credits. With No Limit, you had everything but the tracklist BEFORE the albums dropped. With every album, you knew what it looked like, knew BBTP would be handling the production, and knew most of the roster would be featured BEFORE the album hit shelves.
