The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be bringing back some fan-favorite characters in animated cameos throughout Avengers: Doomsday.

According to a report from
The Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios is exploring ways to bring
their animated properties into
Avengers: Doomsday, and it's likely to be done in an animated format respective to their original universe, rather than trying to adapt them into live-action. This means that
Avengers: Doomsday could have scenes similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam, with the animated characters appearing on-screen with the live-action cast.
The report also clarifies that while the
animated Loki character Miss Minutes is expected to return for
Doomsday, the information is in addition to her interactions on screen, hinting at more animated characters from other Marvel properties. This opens up the
Avengers movie to have cameos from characters in
What If...?, the Disney+ MCU anthology series that explores alternate timelines from the multiverse, which would fit the film's narrative perfectly.
Right now, details about
Avengers: Doomsday remain scarce, with the film scheduled to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026. At 2024's SDCC, Marvel Studios shared
Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as the film's antagonist, Doctor Doom, and that the Russo Brothers would return as directors and producers. Filming is reported to kick off in April, so more details about the film may emerge once it commences production. Besides Downey's Doctor Doom, The Fantastic Four are also confirmed to appear in
Doomsday, with
The Fantastic Four: First Steps being the first film in Phase Six of the MCU.
Another
Avengers movie,
Secret Wars, is also in development for a 2027 release. With Phase Six's saga exploring the multiverse and pitting Marvel's heroes against one of the biggest villains in comics history, it's likely that these movies will include the biggest roster of characters in MCU history. The
Russo brothers have already talked about the two movies, saying they have to 'outdo' the success of
Infinity War and
Endgame.
Which Animated Characters Might Appear in Avengers: Doomsday?
In 2021, the
MCU expanded with What If...?, its first animated series that, similar to its comics' counterpart, explored alternate timelines that saw major moments in MCU films flipped on their heads. One of
What If...?'s main characters is the Watcher, who observes the multiverse and does not interfere with its events. The character has gone on to appear in
I Am Groot,
X-Men '97 and
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, with The Cosmic Circus' report hinting that the character seems one of the most likely to be in
Doomsday.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man characters and the
X-Men '97 cast are apparently also viable candidates for the movie. Concept art of a Disneyland Avengers ride showed the animated Spider-Man appearing alongside live-action heroes, while the X-Men '97 characters are stuck across time and space — making a multiverse story the perfect opportunity to reunite them properly.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
