I was thinking today about how the Donald Sterling thing was an amazing blessing for the NBA. they got to take dramatic, decisive action to distance themeselves symbolically from a racist (whom they ignored for decades) while nonetheless continuing to perpetuate institutional racism of various sorts on a grand scale. Meanwhile, that racist, while widely deplored, will walk away with somewhere between 500 milly and a billy made off the labor of blacks. And though the Clippers will probably end up with an ownership team that includes a black person, nothing will have changed at all, and Silver can get back to forcing young nikkas to stay on the NCAA plantation system.
And to tie it to hip hop, I'm listening to a
Madlib remix of Gangstarr's "Just To Get A Rep" and the sampled chorus
stickup kids is out to tax really resonates in this context. "Brothers are amused by other brothers' rep/but the thing to know best is where the gun is kept... And some might say that he's a dummy/but he's sticking you, and taking all of
your money..."
