a post from an LA guy on realcavsfans.com
So by pure coincidence, we had a long scheduled
dinner tonight with two people who know Sterling (side note: in our West Hollywood trendy restaurant we heard no fewer than 4 tables/bar groups discussing Sterling—big news here in La La Land). Without being too specific, this being the internet and all, one of the people in our party knows him not through basketball but because she works with Donald on the under privileged children side of his charitable work which is the main focus of his giving. Her husband has been around him in social situations.
Here’s what they said, especially vis-a-vis his dating/sleeping with a half-black, half-mexican woman:
Sterling has an old-school plantation mentality. In his mind, there’s a real difference between House "N-words" and Field "N-Words.” (for those of you who don’t know/understand the historical difference, you can
read about it here). House "N-words" are acceptable to be around and even have sex with because they’ve been exposed to Higher White Culture and know their place, are respectful of the white owner types, well behaved, etc. What Sterling hates is the Field "N-word" types, he sees them as brute animals, far beneath him. Having sex with a House "N-word" is an acceptable act of power and domination for him, he definitely wouldn’t see her as his equal but rather as a beautiful, sexual beast that has been properly tamed and controlled. Plus he sees having a beautiful House “N-word” around him as potentially useful in his ability to communicate with, relate to, and yes control his basketball team of Field “N-words.”
What upset him is that she was hanging out with the “other” type of African-Americans who Sterling believes are lowly, uncultured Field "N-words." It degrades her and by extension him that she would think it’s okay to still be with “those people” when if she was properly grateful and understanding, she would
only want to be around the Higher Status whites. It’s a slap in the face to him that he gave her access to his world and yet she still dares to hang around those “lower” blacks (and yes, Magic, for all he’s accomplished is seen as lower, because after all, he accomplished it first by playing sports which Sterling sees as his modern equivalent of owning a team of Field “N-words.”) For Sterling, she doesn’t appreciate what he’s given her and the privileges she’s being granted. He's flummoxed in that conversation because he can hardly believe she doesn't see something so obvious and all that he's done for her.
That’s the analysis from two people who know him (and to be clear, DESPISE him btw but work/charitable commitments forced her to hang with him in the past). Knowing him, they felt absolutely sure this is a key part of his psyche and the best way to understand what we heard in that recording.Take it for what it’s worth.
