They put the NBA in a position to HAVE to do something because ignoring or supporting Sterling means that they support his opinions...which then causes many an NBA fan to contemplate supporting the NBA. The ripple effect by making a strong stand here will lead to quick and clear results. Doing nothing and pretending nothing happened (or doing little more than just giving statements) really does nothing...Sterling gets to apologize, keep making money off his slaves professional athletes, and the world keeps spinning.
