Cut 75% of that out and I might read.
EDIT: If it's anti-religion then nvm, I'll read it.

was Jesus a real person regardless of whether you believe he is a God, Do you believe he actually once existed?Saw it on /r/atheism.
I'm not convinced by it. its a massive claim.
Of course we know religion is made up, but they're making some REALLY dubious claims here that would need severe supporting.
Even further, its not going to shake most religious people since...they're not really open to "evidence" like that.

"American Biblical scholar Joseph Atwill will be appearing before the British public for the first time in London on the 19th of October to present a controversial new discovery: ancient confessions recently uncovered now prove, according to Atwill, that the New Testament was written by first-century Roman aristocrats and that they fabricated the entire story of Judas Priest. His presentation will be part of a one-day symposium entitled "Covert Messiah" at Conway Hall in Holborn (full details can be found at http://www.covertmessiah.com).
Although to many scholars his theory seems outlandish, and is sure to upset some believers, Atwill regards his evidence as conclusive and is confident its acceptance is only a matter of time. "I present my work with some ambivalence, as I do not want to directly cause Christians any harm," he acknowledges, "but this is important for our culture. Alert citizens need to know the truth about our past so we can understand how and why governments create false histories and false gods. They often do it to obtain a social order that is against the best interests of the common people."
Atwill asserts that Christianity did not really begin as a religion, but a sophisticated government project, a kind of propaganda exercise used to pacify the subjects of the Roman Empire. "Jewish sects in Palestine at the time, who were waiting for a prophesied warrior Messiah, were a constant source of violent insurrection during the first century," he explains. "When the Romans had exhausted conventional means of quashing rebellion, they switched to psychological warfare. They surmised that the way to stop the spread of zealous Jewish missionary activity was to create a competing belief system. That's when the 'peaceful' Messiah story was invented. Instead of inspiring warfare, this Messiah urged turn-the-other-cheek pacifism and encouraged Jews to 'give onto Caesar' and pay their taxes to Rome."

If it was created by Roman aristocrats to 'control' people,. they wouldn't have been killing Christians during Christianity's early history, and if it was meant to control Jews, it did an awful job at it.
No Christian will believe anything this dude says, they will say he is in with the devil, got to have faith etc. Anyway the whole Bible was made up and is a patchwork of several religions, so this shyt aint groundbreaking to me at all.
Saw it on /r/atheism.

So instead of killing them they turn around and decide to convert the entire empire to a rival religion they made up and persecuted people for following in the first place? You gotta remember, if you're roman, it MAKES SENSE (i'm not condoning it) to start killing off christians/jews back then.
Youve got a society thats pretty stable for the most part and you let your conquered people keep their own religions as long as they pay taxes.
Then you've got this group of people who not only have their own religion, but start to introduce and perpetuate the notion that not only is there a god, BUT theres only ONE GOD...AND no one else can believe it.
Thats kinda the problem.
These fervent believers were fukking up the balance for everyone else. They were like the modern muslims in secular european societies.

But there same document you reference saying "God why have you forsaken me?" Is the same document which says he has risen?I don't know if jesus existed as all the evidence for his existence is (at this point) 100% hearsay. That includes Josephus' account.
IF jesus was a real person, he was nothing more than a flavor-of-the-month charismatic cult leader who died and whose followers took his shyt way too seriously.
Plus, when dude is on the cross, he doesn't sound like someone who is that faithful when he yells out "God why have you foresaken me?" Sounds like someone who knows his charade came to an abrupt end since he's not being saved or anything...LOL...not someone dude speaking in parables.
But there same document you reference saying "God why have you forsaken me?" Is the same document which says he has risen?
How can 11 disciples and 3 other women come up with this lie and keep the story consistent at the same time?I don't understand that comment. His body just "wasn't there" doesn't mean he fukking "rose to heaven"
Unless you believe Muhammad flew the heaven on a WINGED HORSE...
