ATL was promoted as a hood movie but truly it's just a coming of age teen movie.
That's why this movie never sat well with me.

The trailer made it seem like it was some fresh out the trap, nikkas bussin guns shyt but it wasn't. It was about roller blading. Nothing wrong with that because skating rinks was big in our community in the past, but it should have been promoted that way.

I remember goin to the movies with a big group to see this shyt thinking the south finally got us a Menace or a New Jersey Drive and being disappointed. Even the lead single from the soundtrack was some gangsta shyt but we get in the theater and nikkas havin skating competitions. I like the movie a lot more than I used to though. They probably should have based it in the mid 90s during the Freaknik era with Bass music being played at the rinks and shyt and actually promoted that way. I most likely would have loved that from the beginning.
