He was/is, and the developers intentionally designed his move set to be the simplest to pick up for new players in each game. He's always been the official mascot of mortal kombat.
but Subzero was the yin to his yang, so its understandable some people gravitate to him as well. There are people who also like joker more than batman, but batman is still the main event,
