Had to hurry up and get to end of this thread real quick. I'm 25 and have taught in a classroom where 1st graders use Macbooks during their morning routine) but I know how mind-blowing it is to see a kid that can't read. It's more heart-breaking meeting high-schoolers who can't read because you know they're on borrowed time.
Comic books probably aren't going to be the answer yet because he doesn't sound like he has an understanding of WORDS that he needs to know yet. Forming sentences from Marvel/DC comic books isn't going to happen anytime soon, breh...
However, here's a few simple tips that could help him along his way and you can pass them to his Mom because it's what he'll be needing in school, more than likely. I'll keep it pretty brief and hope it helps.
1. Dolch Sight Words. They're basically words that kids are supposed to learn according to their grade level. Kids often get evaluated based on how many of these words they know.
They go from pre-school to Grade 3. Either print them off or just write them down in two places (one for him and one for yourself to take note) and keep going over the words with him and note which ones he doesn't know.
Go over the ones he doesn't know and once he can get through the list w/o messing up, move on to the next list.
2. Starfall. Google it and put his ass on the computer. We made my niece get on there and she loved it so much that she'd come through and ask to use it on my computer. They can read stories and click each word they don't know if they need help. The program actually tells them and that's less that YOU actually have to do. Pretty soon, they're reading that shyt without having to click for help.
....but yeah, I know how you feel on the "It's not my responsibility. You can imagine how I feel. I teach and people in my fam are always trying to get me to take my free time and help their kids with ALL kinds of homework & projects. I'm just trying to chill but like everyone's been saying, a few minutes of your time won't hurt (especially with these two things).
Something'll click for him and he'll be like
...and you'll see some good grades and go
