At what age is the average person supposed to be proficient at reading in general?

Another thing that needs to be said is that kids develop at different levels. While on the internet everyone is John Locke and has read Plato's collected work before age 5, kids in the real world develop on their own schedule. I have an 8 year old cousin who is raised in a good family and he struggles with reading. Someone like your nephew, who has a shytty family and could easily have emotional, mental health or learning problems has the deck stacked against him. So while it is good that you are making the effort, you are the one who needs to help him. It isn't enough to download some reading software and call him a retard if he doesn't get it at first. You are the one who then needs to reexamine the problem based on the information you've collected and then try again.

that ain't my style bro, never been a bully my whole life. I might say some cray shyt on this forum but I'm pretty much a lame, nerdy square in real life b. I never called him a retard or stupid but he calls me just about every curse word in the book and has been doing so ever since he was 6 months (I'm not kidding)

I'm not religious but this lil nikka gotta be satan bro

And these games do work, I remember having a geometry video game as a kid that helped me get an A on a class test

:ehh:

brb download just finished, hope this shyt actually installs. My only beef is that he has two parents and I'm probably the only one wasting time at this very moment on this shyt. shyt doesn't even make sense

Fair enough. From the sounds of it the situation is ****ed and the odds for this kid are bad. I guess you are doing what anyone with your resources can reasonably be expected to do. Life's not fair :to:

That's kinda sad. I've played with kids that are 6 that know how to play Halo decently. I have a hard time believing he doesn't know what "Start/Select" means...this can't be the first game he's ever played. My niece is 4 and plays LFD1/2 with my brother and can read at a higher level than your nephew and she just started school this Monday.

I'm calling ducktales.

I put on Halo 3 for my 8 yr old nephew and this nikka been sitting there with the :to: for about 20 minutes.

there are 3 options on the screen Start Select and Leave.

My memory isn't that good but I doubt I was that confused at those 3 words at 8 yrs of age.

I think he's retarded.... but its to be expected

his mama had the nikka when she was 17 by some random nikka who is in jail now

:manny:
He should be able to read in kindergarten, on a very low level. That's like 5 years old.
If he can't read at 8, the teachers at his school should have realized this and put him into some kind of program for dumb kids.

If you give him a book and ask him to read the simple words, like colors and easy words, then you'll be able to know whether he can read or not.

just wrote out mad colors on a piece of paper and he got everything right except "White"

nikka said "W, w, went?" :dwillhuh:

5 min later we still on this same word :mindblown:

which makes me think that all the other colors he only knew by memory and doesn't know how to break down something "unknown"

Boy if u can't do it right, don't have kids at all.

do it right means be willing to literally put ur own life on hold to raise another being.

I'm kidless so I have no responsibilities, I'm only suppose to care like 20%, 25% ......parents are the one who should be putting in full effort ...fuk yal :pacspit:

I'm sitting here right now reading a game informer magazine with him right now.

We're only reading the big title words and ignoring the little print.

I'm the type to sit there for 1 hour if it takes that long for him to get one word, giving him hints for sounding it out here in there, breaking the word down in parts..etc because I know that simply telling him the word doesn't teach him anything. It just makes u an expert at memorizing

Yet he's huffing and puffing, and getting an attitude with me while we're in the process, while I'm basically calm patient the entire time. Not saying anything to make him feel bad or stupid.

Called my mom (his grandmother) and she basically said that she's raised her kids and that its my sisters responsibility. Had her on speaker so my nephew heard the whole convo. So after she hung up I'm like yo "Your moms don't give a shyt about u, ur grandma don't give a shyt about you, your pops is in jail and don't give a shyt about u, I'm the only person here willing to work with u man, so do u want me to help u? because if u don't then we don't ever have to do this ever again, but If u do then I'm willing to spend as long as it takes"

He walks out the living room in frustration saying "Ur an Idiot"

so fuk it, I hope the lil bad nikka stays illiterate his whole life. I wouldn't even give a fukk if the stupid nikka didn't always look confused during video game menus.

I downloaded that 2nd grade Jumpstart education game and they're asking questions like "What is a noun? what is a verb etc"....full sentenced based questions and I'm thinking damn, this lil nikka can't even read let alone read and answer a question at the same time..... he starts school again next week...so he's pretty much doomed.

All I know is that once I get my shyt together and decide to have my very own seeds they're gonna be reading straight out of the gate, gonna cop that "Your Baby can read" program the moment shorty tell me she's pregnant. No time wasted.

Yo I'm in the same boat as you are.

My girlfriend's son is 10 and can't read. shyt is embarrassing, and he's not even my kid. He has some form of autism, and his mother thinks he has dyslexia, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that he can't read. He can barely write, as well.

Dude will pause the game and run upstairs to get me and ask what something says. I try to help him sound shyt out, but eventually I get frustrated myself and just stop trying. Part of the reason why I get frustrated is that his mom doesn't do much to help him. All summer he's played videogames and watched cartoons nonstop.

shyt is getting worse, too. He stays up super late watching TV and doing whatever the fukk he wants. The other day I made him turn it off and go in his room and the nikka started crying. His mother sees those tears and sucks up to him and lets him get his way, so there's no collaboration on her part on being a good parent.

At this point I'm like :yeshrug:. I'm constantly seen as the bad guy because I stay on his ass hard (no pedo). But I'm tired of fighting with this little nikka about things, and I'm tired of his mother spoiling him just because he cries too much.

So trust me I know the feeling. Teaching a kid to read that's not even yours is :beli: status.

Edit: Dyslexia is a good enough excuse, but his mom should go get him properly tested.

Just when I felt like giving up the softie inside of me couldn't

I'm basically resorting to what I used to do as a child

gave him like 20 sheets of drawing paper and told him to create his very own comic, he has to draw his own pictures and come up a story to go along with it

maybe this will work?

told him i'd help him with some words as long as he makes an effort

man, she might not be wifey material if she don't give a fukk about her son's reading ability like that bro. :what:

might have to find another if u plan on having kids b

I have an *undiagnosed* form of mild autism also, (Aspergers) shyt doesn't really affect intelligence b...even in extreme cases...

her fam originally thought she had the intellect of a 5 yr old but she was of normal intelligence the entire time, just couldn't express it.

that lil boy is just lazy
