Finally time to put my thoughts on this game
This game is great! Easily the best pure platformer i've played in a LOOOOOOOONG time. Like, since my N64 days. Banjo Kazooie/Sonic Adventure are probably the last platformers i've played in the same vein as this game, and sonic Adventure isn't even a pure platformer. IFor me, the nostalgia doesn't come from the references to old playstation IP's. It comes from playing banjo kazooie and scouring worlds for Jiggies, and finding lost Jinjos, similar to how you spend each world looking for puzzle pieces and your astrobot friends. Easily one of the best games i've played this year. It's a game that understands that simple works. It's pretty much the exact opposite of FF7 Rebirth in terms of approach and execution. FF7 Rebirth was loaded (some might say "bloated") with content at every turn. This game takes a minimalist approach, and keeps it simple yet effective.
What I like about the game:
-It's the most PS5 game of all the version exclusives we've got. Not only because of the constant constant references to past games, but it makes the best use of the haptic features of the PS5 controller. Each step on a surface has its own sound and feel, whether you're moving through mud, water, a metal surface, balloon, launch pad, swinging from a vine, you name it.
-Tbe soundtrack is excellent. So many catchy tunes. My personal favorite is "Cooling Springs - Astro Bot remix". But the soundtrack is loaded with great songs that capture the mood of each level
-Tons of extra levels. You have all the original levels that come in each new world, but there are 2 vortexes in each new world that can take you to a secret dimension with hidden levels. In addition to that, you have 1 retro level in each world as well as the X-O-Triangle-Square obstacles as well. The Face Button worlds have are the more challenging platformer levels that you might have to take a few tries to beat. The two most challenging worlds were "Splashing Sprint" and the very last Challenge if you are able to get all 300 bots. Both took me 20 mins or so to do.
-Extremely responsive controls. The controls for this game are fantastic. The pace at which Astro moves is great. I've been complaining about different games having unresponsive controls and questionable movement speed. It's great to play a game like this where the controls feel perfect. The overall pace of the game is great tbh. If you ever die in a level, you are back at it in about 3-4 seconds. It keeps you immersed which is very important
-Fun powers. You get the jet chicken that boosts you vertically, the jet dog that boosts you ahead, the frog boxing gloves, the monkey hands, the machine gun toy, and a lot more. You use them to advance through certain levels. My favorite is the time-stopping power
-Fun boss battles. At the end of each world, you fight a boss. My favorite was Mecha Leon
-Small features that make the game enjoyable and give it personality. Astro Bot has many different idle animations. You can give Astro Bot different skins after buying them from the Gacha Game center (Bloodborne, Ratchet, Jak, Sly Cooper, Transparent Suit, Gold Suit, etc), you can change the color of the PS5 Controller ship, you can interact with the other 300+ Bots on at the crash site, you can buy accessories for those bots by playing the Gacha game, the bots on the crash site work together to help you advance through the worlds
What I dislike about the game:
-That purple enemy that shoots the purple goop at you. It tracks you where you go. I hate him
-The homing missile chameleon enemy. fukk him
-The mouse power that shrinks Astro was only used ONE TIME throughout the main game. Granted, they did make it available for the new Christmas DLC that came out a few days, but to have as many worlds as they do and only have an awesome power like that only available one time is disappointing.
But that's about it. I'd STRONGLY recommend this game to anyone with a PS5, and even to those without a PS5. It's fun for both adults and children. It was damn sure worthy of GOTY. It's crazy cuz FF7 rebirth had it locked up, but AstroBot came at the last second and tucked the year in. I have no idea what my GOTY is yet, but it's between this game, Metaphor Refantazio, and Rebirth. AstroBot is a 9.3/10 for me
Welp, onto the Silient Hill 2 Remake to close out the year....
