It's definitely taken on a very top-40 thing. " - Slash

^That statement^ was in response to this question

Q: For the first time this past year, R&B/hip-hop overtook rock as the most popular genre in terms of total consumption. How do you feel about the state of the genre?

Slash: Rock isn't mainstream anymore, and in some ways, I like that. It harks back to when rock 'n' roll was more of an underground concept, when people were speaking about things that they weren't necessarily comfortable saying in the mainstream arena. As far as hip-hop is concerned, it's become so generic at this point. It's definitely taken on a very top-40 thing.

If you haven’t listened to a hip hop record made after 2005 you have no business commenting on it.

He's right tho :manny:
I keep up with hip hop enough to know that it has become a shell of it's former self
A lot of hip hop of today just sounds like some of the most non creative music
Rhymes ain't as clever no more or even saying much of anything if at all these days and a lot of the beats sound the same and or most of the time are straight up wack.

2018 has easily been one of the best years for hip hop in the past 20 years.

You think so?
I think the complete opposite
Only album I've kept in rotation has been Jazzy Jeff's M3 album
That's a great album and it's the 1st album in God's knows when that I've listen to more than a dozen times
I mean, I really love that album
But other than that?
This year as far as music goes has been forgettable to me

Name some albums you’ve listened to.

2 album I forgot to name that is good is Jay Rock's Redemption and Black Thought's Streams of Thought Vol. 1 was good

J. Cole's KOD
Jay and B's Everything Is Love
PRhyme 2
No News is Good News - Phonte
Planet Asia's joint

I heard some of Nipsey Hussle's album, the songs I heard was cool.

That's about it
I don't go outta my way to check for music by artist who's songs I've heard enough of to know I don't like and in this era, it's a lot of them.

Hip Hop is in a pretty bad state right now. It’s funny I just mentally checked myself into Larry Holmes Garden :flabbynsick: after hearing Blocboy JB and log on to see this thread. It all sounds the same. Poorly mixed 808 hihat, snare/clap and distorted/saturated bass. It’s way too uninspired.

Edit: and I don’t even have a problem with “trap music” earlier trap music didn’t sound like one whole big perpetual song.
