My review
I think the first thing to say is that you should go into this movie not expecting the same kind of heart pumping impact Alien had, it doesn't break any new ground and pretty much follows the structure of Alien and every other Sci Fi discovery movie since.
What it does deliver is a good sci fi tale that has stunning visuals, a lovecraftian atmosphere and adds positively to the already in place mythos. It answers some questions and leaves others.
On the acting front Fassbender does a good job emulating what we know and Rapace is the heart, but Theron is vastly underused, Vickers is fairly bland and has no stand out scene and a
. Idris Elba is solid as the ships captain but the rest of the support are throwaway and the guy playing Holloway is poor, although he wasn't helped by the dialogue he was given at times.
The film is engaging but I never found it thrilling, it was easy to read beat for beat. The world they land on is immersive though and the story has enough in it along with the visuals to keep you involved. However it doesn't reach a climax, it just goes where you expect it to.
The film is quite slow and then suddenly is in a rush to get to the ending, an ending that is partially satisfying but also lacking in a moment to truly give you that feeling of awe, it also has a couple of parts to it that don't quite work, one logically and the other due to lack of character development.
The final shot is fun but doesn't explain anything regarding Alien.
I'd say this is a good return to sci fi for Ridley, but more a safe and steady addition to his Alien film than the triumphant masterpiece some were hoping for.
6/10
