I don’t agree. It’s modeled after England. Estos is England. The wildlings are like Scottish tribes or north of the Roman “wall”. Westeros is Western Europe. Braavos[sic] is like Italy. That city with the giant statue is just like the Colllosus of Greece. Even that other city looked like Venice. The Dothraki are for the Middle East or Afghanistan. When Arya talks about what’s east of estos I think we’re supposed to think of the America’s that she’s going to discover.

EDIT. one other hint, the “Narrow Sea” that separates Estos and Westeros is the English Channel.

According to Wikipedia, Italian Renaissance take place 1300's-1600's, with it's peak being 1400's-1500's. The King's Landing storyline in season 1 is based of stuff that happened in England in the mid-late 1400's. So Italian Renaissance is supposed to being going on as the same time as GoT/ASOIAF.

The Free Cities are based on them.

Bravos is Venice. They didn’t show Volantis, Lys, Pentos, Tyrosh and Myr enough to say what they were based on.

It’s a maritime country similar to Venice. Inside a lagoon. Canals. Submerged buildings. Huge merchant class. Even makes sense given real history. Rome was a superpower during the birth of Christ and after it fell 500 years later, Europe went through a dark period until city states in Italy revitalized the continent during the Renaissance. In ASOIAF, Valyria is clearly the Roman Empire. Ghis is Greece with Arabic influence. And the Free Cities are the Italian City States in that they came to power after their version of Rome fell and the power vacuum left an opening for other cities to gain influence.
