It’s hard to even tell when the hook and verse start and end because they’re done with the same flow and usually half the same words so how the fukk can you tell what’s what?
its that freestyle 1 take shyt nikkas be doing. alot of these songs dont even have hooks in the beat. remember back in the day nikkas would add an element to the beat to make a section for the hook? i dont hear that anymore.

Artists used to make money off album sales, now they make money on tours.

Their music has become less album oriented (verses with deep meaning for repeated listens) and more club oriented (adrenaline-pumping hooks that make everyone wild out).

Most rappers don't even have real hooks,so when your hook is just a chant of 4 words, the song will be shorter.

believe it or not i noticed around 2010 when i first came across mac miller in high school around 2:17 this nikka hardly ever spit 3 verses and i never noticed until he said the shyt. then i went back and started paying attention to other new rapper i listened to at the time and they werent doing the shyt either.

:mindblown:

This is the first song I was thinking about when I saw the thread title.

I remember when I first heard that shyt "I haven't spit three verses on a song in a minute" I was like :dahell: fukk you mean

Do you know when exactly did this start happening? It's not anything new, but it's just outrageous realizing how many songs are < 3:30 now.

Just peep these examples, 21 y/o Playboi Carti:

Mostly referring to solo artist songs, but this has also been the case even for groups. Seems like songs get shorter and shorter as time goes on. That old traditional format of 3 verses + 3-4 hooks seems rare.

I dont know about you, but I honestly believe this era of hip hop will soon pass. We are in the rebirth of the early 80's and I can forsee a new era with all types of new styles and directions. So to answer your question, we cant really make that determination just yet as the overall direction of where the game is going but the short song format will be a staple in this era of hip hop when we look back on it.

TBH, it was dying in 2010 and died out totally by 2015. That was the reason why Rick Ross songs were streamed less and people didn't look forward to his later projects because attention spans gotten shorter and shorter.
