in my life I've only met one person who was a single dad, and that was because his ex wife was a crack addict.

I see what you're getting at, but a father/mother asking for someone else's help isn't as effective as an active figure in their upbringing.
I was with my mom as a preteen and she did that, maybe I was just a dumb-ass kid but it wasn't as effective as my father being there and showing me things.
