sometimes the military sounds like a crappy state university...except you get a paycheck (and possibly shot/killed) instead of an education...and only 10% of the population is female.
Kinda, sorta. I was in college at two different state schools for 3 and 1/2 years before I joined the Army, 2 and 1/2 of those years were on campus. I was also a single Soldier in the barracks for over two years. Let me break it down to you. First off, the percentage of females is more like 15%, at least in the Army, with even less in Marine Corps; but more in the Air Force and Navy (not sure about the Coast Guard). Finest females I've seen have been in the Marine Corps, followed by Air Force, than Army. Haven't seen too many Navy females, but the ones I have seen didn't impress me. The females aren't distributed evenly at all. Because of my job, I've been able to be assigned to both combat arms units and support units. In some of the infantry units I've been in, there were no females, or just one or two in the headquarters company. Once I was in a support brigade that had finance, signal, and human resources companies. That brigade was probably about 50% female. When I was living in the barracks, the age range spanned from a few 17 year olds, all the way to a handful of junior enlisted that were in their mid to late 30's. Though I'd say a majority of people were roughly 18-25. Just like college, there was a lot of fukking going on, at least between Army females and other military males. Also, just like in college, most of the females didn't really fukk with local dudes too often; but the local females definitely fukked with us. I ran a shytload of trains in college, and I ran a few in the Army. There was more of a variety of female in the barracks than on campus. We had black chicks, white chicks, latinas of all types (mostly Rican and Mexican), Samoans, and a handful of others. I still remember this Indian/Jamaican mixed chick I fukked when I was a young private. If I ever see that chick again.....she's getting fukked on site, eating ass and everything. Most of them were in decent shape. What most folks in the Army consider "fat" isn't really fat compared to non-military females. Yeah, I fukked the "fat" girl of the company few times. Chick was 5'2" and something like 160 with ass and DD's. While they were calling her fat, I was getting in that ass (until she got kicked out for not passing height and weight standards repeatedly). Some of them looked good, most were plain/average looking, and some were butt ass ugly. Yes, there are more butch dykes....but it's not like the Army is filled with them, which is what a lot of people think. When I was in college it was mostly white chicks, a handful of black chicks, and barely anyone else. I actually partied harder in the Army than I did in college, because I was getting paid and didn't have any bills except a car note and cellphone (why the fukk did I get married again?). Every weekend we were drunk as fukk in the barracks or in some club in Fayetteville, NC (most likely Kagney's). But in college I could get smoked out and not have to worry about shyt, and I didn't have to worry about Friday morning PT formation at 0630, after I'd just got in about three hours earlier. All in all, the social aspect is somewhat similar to a shytty public university...just more diverse and less drugs, etc.
If you don't get an education while you're in the military, you're wasting your damn time. I finished my bachelor's degree roughly two years after joining the Army, and I used tuition assistance to pay for every last bit of it. Sad thing is that so many people can't balance partying on the weekend with going to school during the week, and they don't take advantage of their benefits. shyt, the Army is going to get all they can out of you...so you might as well get all you can in return.

Yeah, there is a "rape" problem in the military. Here's my take on it. Not sure about the other branches, I am coming from an Army perspective. The laws regarding "sexual assualt" are A LOT stricter in the military than in the civilian world. Also, there is no such thing as double jeopardy in the military. You can be foud innocent of some shyt, and they can bring it back up a year later and send your ass to prison, or kick you out of the Army for the same offense for which you'd previously been found innocent. If somebody has 1 drop of alcohol, they cannot consent to sex according to the Army. I've seen a few drunken sex situations end up as sexual assualt charges once the girl regrets that shyt. I saw my boy go to Leavenworth over some bullshyt like that. I wonder if that shyt would work in a male's favor if they reported it? I remember getting drunk as fukk one night, only to wake up and find out this ugly ass SSG had brought me to her house and we ended up fukking...even though bytch looked like a more anorexic and even uglier version of Tori Spelling.
To be fair, sometimes commanders will use their influence to protect those they feel are good Soldiers. Which is why I am all for what some people in Congress and Senate are proposing in reference to taking sexual assualt out of the military justice system's hands, and turning it over to civilian agencies. I believe that will get rid of unfair command influence, as well as less prosecutions over bullshyt that would have never seen the light of day in the civilian world. There's shyt happening on campus every night that could probably get you time in Leavenworth if you were a Soldier.
