Are albums now leaking LATER than they usually do in the past?

Before a year and a half ago it was custom to have every album LEAKED 2 weeks before it came out in stores. We saw The Throne try to go around that and other ppl who have played with pushing their albums up ... but still 2 years ago or so albums leaked a good 2 weeks before. Ppl were just happy if it didn't leak a FULL month before it was scheduled to drop. but about 2 weeks was the regular.


Ross album which is a "highly anticipated" album this year leaked late as shyt less than a week before the album was slated to drop.


2-chainz which you can say is a moderately anticipated album hasn't leaked yet .. 8 days before its schedule to drop ..

Nas album leaked later than usual too. Channel Orange didn't leak almost a week before and basically got pushed up.

Is this a current trend or just a blip? and what you guys think might be affecting it?

I've spoken to some label ppl and they told me few things I"ll share as the thread goes on but I wanna hear from the-coli experts on whats going on.

Itunes release a week before it would drop in stores ... They promo'ed it that way so a lot of ppl instead of looking for bootleg links .. knew it was only available on itunes and just bought it there. Then the ppl who are stuck on getting CD's .. probably heard it before .. but then got the chance to purchase the hardcopy a week later.


Its almost matching the movie release ... think about it. You can go watch a movie .. but for you to get a dvd you have to wait for a while till its out. I mean of course with mp3's ... once you buy the "ticket" u own the mp3. But as far as CD's ... u had to wait to get it.

Plus think about it they had 2 singles in rotation and another about to drop. If each single is bought 10 times. It was counted as an album. I believe something like that was done 50's sales once too ... where since there was so many digital sales it was a lil bit funny with nielsen calculations for em.

They released it first to itunes. It went to retail like 2 weeks later.

It's always been within the 6-10 day window with some exceptions. These days it's normally closer to 6. I remember BP2 didn't leak until the Thursday night before it dropped. Black Album was like 2 weeks.

They had one of the producers on the album literally sleep with the files. Kanye stopped exchanging beats and vocals with other artists/producers and insisted that everything was done in studio with him around the time he was recording MBDTF. Watch the Throne took that idea and went further with it.

Records were a lot easier to leak previously because people got sloppy, other people would start sharing, and then someone with a view from near the inside would post it to a file sharing network just because they could. The industry finally started tightening their circles and the time between submission to online retailers for digital distribution and release dates has gotten smaller.

? Albums usually get at the manufacturing plant where they press them up in huge amt's . . . And they do need a certain time to press em up. All it usually takes is 1 worker..

Plus certain copies they give to industry insiders have drops on them a lot of times that will indicate its a label copy. Just like movie companies have watermarks on their movies they send out for reviews ..

Just wait til the full album comes out or gets leaked.

Im tired of listening to new albums where I already heard half the songs..
