I was in Madrid and Paris last year and damn near walked into Large Professor and Jeru shows. They are heavy into DJ culture in Europe to it lends itself to playing those East Coast golden era MCs

WORD!

I actually think Jeru was living in Paris, at some point.

But what you said about them being into DJ culture is true. They're still very much into boosting that today. Which I respect! We need to get back to that over here too. A lot of our legends can't book shows here anymore, so they have to go out there where they're getting way more love.

Doesn't Jeru live in Berlin? Got him a white girlfriend too. If only early 90s Jeru could see him now.

Jeru is like those basketball players that made a living overseas that just decided, fukk it, might as well stay here since I been here as long as ive been back home.

He could. I don’t even know.

I saw him on IG a couple years ago saying he was in Paris and had moved there or something. But yeah, '94 Jeru was always talking about how he could never f*ck with a "white devil", so I don’t know what he's doing these days. HAHA! I guess a lot has changed for bro over the past 30 years.

There's a lot of people who discovered various Southern rap acts in Europe, Russia and Japan though the internet.

Southern rap wasn't that big overseas in the 1990s through mid-2000s. It wasn't even national in the US for much of that time.

There are overseas producers who sample niche acts and even that could blow them up, not just over there but even in the US. Memphis rap pioneer Tommy Wright III is one example.

I'm curious as I see MC's like Jeru making their livelihood living in Europe performing their old hits. I see this with a lot of east coast 90s MCs. Are the Southern acts of that era being just as embraced overseas?

I live in Copenhagen and most acts from the 80s or 90s come over here from the east coast and through Europe and eat. I don't really notice southern acts here.

Because they don't

Hasn't Trap has gotten pretty popular in Europe? It might be the most popular sound there too.
Drill comes from Trap, and Trap comes from Crunk.
Memphis started it in the early-90s. NorCal picked up similar sounds in the mid-90s.

G-Funk is big too, right? Do underground LA acts come through?
How frequent are NorCal acts there, just rarely? The Jacka did shows overseas.

Nothing wrong with going overseas but hip hop should be allowed to grow old and appreciate the older artists. Hip Hop has always been out with the old in with the new. But you got rock bands that can tour in the US forever. I wish Timbo and Swiss beats would bring versus back and take it over the road.

Every act wasn't national, and every act wasn't mainstream.

Run DMC and Wu Tang were mainstream but Geto Boys wasn't. You had to be into rap to know them. Let's not act like everybody had the same popularity everywhere.

Lil Wayne didn't even chart internationally before 2008 when he dropped "Lollipop" that made him mainstream domestically and internationally.

Yeah, all the young people eat up trap, drill and grime here. Don't get me wrong, but they do also enjoy real hip hop here. Just my opinion at least.

Older artists and their fans just have to accept that eventually, they won't be the top acts anymore...and to just show up when they have shows and enjoy the music.
