Been looking for work for awhile, applied all over the area but nobody wanna call me back. My mom says you can come work at Walmart with me, their hiring overnight stockers right now. All you do is stock the shelves now that doesn't sound very appealing to me but she says she's sure they'd hire me. :ehh:

I put in the application wait a week and just when I think they must not be interested I get a call on some "we're not hiring overnight stockers right now but if you change your application to overnight maintenance we can get you in for an interview."

I'm like maintenance sounds much more dignified, must be some type of manager :obama:

I ask my mom whats overnight maintenance she said its a janitor :sadcam:

I'm sitting here thinking if I should apply for this shyt or not. I live with my parents so I don't necessarily need to take this job but this seems like a sure thing and its not like I have better options right now.

OP, you in the best position right now because you have your youth. I would suggest you take the job and stack your money while you're living rent free. In the meantime, develop yourself and find out what you truly want to do with your life. Create a list of goals so you won't lose your focus. One thing you don't want to do is get comfortable with the Job because once you do it's like trying to get out of quicksand. Best of lucks!

easiest and best job, with the most relaxing subdivision work units you could possibly get.
best job i ever had, outside of selling internet connections was actually buffing floors.
you get to listen to headphones and work a huge floor buffer and the equipment looks so complicated.
nobody will bother you,...
if you have a manager who is a prude who never did it.
he will leave you alone and just stay out of your way.
in hopes it gets done and you being the only one who knows the pads, and polisher.

i would buff a floor in college and then i had the whole night to do whatever.
plus, i had the keys and this is also how i met biggie, lil kim, junior mafia, and the tiger lily herself natalie merchant.
when, i was the floor buffer and maintenance guy at michigan state's auditorium.

that may have been a dream job location but any job location is a dream job in janitor.
all because the more work you get the easier your day is.

real talk,..i tried my damnest to get a job as a janitor again, cause the whole shyt is easy as pie.
plus, if you get enough work all you have to do is do the work and the day is over.
which is why, being a janitor, one of the best jobs.

put on headphones do your job, about six or seven albums.
give or take a tool album or two length wise and the day is over.

get a cert in parlevel management, eat off knowing how much toilet tissue should be in a cabinet.

I agree with the posters that are saying that dude still has his youth, so he has more options than, let's say a 30 year old working the same job. All of the suggestions made as to what he should do were spot on. Jobs like Wal-Mart should be a last resort. There are a lot of problems, both with individual stores and interally, that makes Wal-Mart a terrible corporation to work for. Nothing can really be done about the BS labor practices that Wally World does because the things they do (barely) fall within the legal limits of each individual state in which they operate. I also agree it's not a long term solution unless you have no ambition or have legal complications that prohibit you from getting a quality job. In that case.....

:yeshrug:

Wal-Mart is losing its monopoly on the domestic retail market, so they are cutting every corner to keep that Walton money going. The middle class that they rose to economic power on is disappearing and Amazon is changing the game. Wal-Mart cannot attract or keep(when they actually do get them) a quality workforce for the general areas of the store (grocery and GM). It's well known that as long as you can pass a background check(no felonies) and a drug test, Wally World will hire you, no other questions asked. The turnover is generally high, especially for overnight stockers becuase the work is so demanding..... if you finish your work on time, they make you stay (late) to help everyone else, then cut your overtime by making you come in an hour or two late everyday or making you take extra long lunches(which are already an hour long).... and you still don't get your work done, especially if you're working in an area that has heavy freight loads.... DAILY! If you work day shifts, they will try to keep you under 35 hours unless you're a department manager because if the overnight shift doesn't do their job, then everything else is fukked up. The unloaders and the overnight stockers RUN the store. PERIOD. The department managers just change shelf mods and complain about freight not being worked. The afternoon shift are full of HS students that don't give a fukk because they can or will quit if you make them work too hard. It's not that serious to them either.

Most of the stores are ran in this manner.

Right now, I do work at a local Wally World and I'm just biding my time until I'm able to say "fukk Wally World!" FOREVER!

My thoughts on maintenance.... At a well operated store, you'll only have to worry about your specific job and if you're going to get your hours. At a poorly operated store, you'll be filling in for missing stockers that decided not to show up or just quit altogether. Maintenance is fairly straightforward, but as I mentioned, it depends on how well the store is ran. Waxing and buffing floors are a main part of the job. Trash pickup (outside, and possibly the plastic and cardboard that is accumulated while working freight), cleaning bathrooms and gathering leftover carts that the cart pushers don't pick up. You'll also have to learn how to use the trash compactor and Baler.

Sorry for the long post.

While you don't want to do it, some janitor is out here with more money than you

Take what you can get but never stop looking for something better

Being jobless and broke is always the worst option

Rep.....seriously there is nothing to be ashamed off. Bills have to be paid. When i was in high school we had elderly people as the janitors of my school. Some students made fun of them. All hard work is equal work to me. I am not paying anyone's bills on here, so I can not knock one's job. At least he is not on his knees doing what he doesn't want to be doing.

That is exactly what is going to happen. He doesn't want the janitor job, he would only be taking it to have some change in his pocket.
His experience is in HR so how would taking a janitorial job help his career? It will do nothing for him professionally unless he is committed to finding a better job during the day. We all have bills to pay but taking that job and sticking with it would be a step back for him.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but given walmart's current pay structure maintenance makes the same as the stockers. also there is the possibility of moving up. One way is to become the maintenance lead/supervisor, which means you are the head janitor. They make approx $1.20-$1.50/hr more. Also there is the possibility of switching over to stocking if you want. It can be an ideal position if you are part time going to school.

That's all I need to read. Props to your mom for saving you. I suggest reading on CBT to handle the mental consternation you have with unfufilled goals (we all have that but don't get lost in them), get on with your job, and look for better work.

also find out if your store has a modular team. those are the people who go around changing shelves, products and labels in a department when new items are going to come in or home office just feels like moving things around. they make the same pay as stockers but there are companies that like to hire walmart workers who know how to read plan-o-grams.

Take the job. Put 75% of your net income into a savings account. You will be richer than guys making twice your gross income and living on their own.
Once you build up that savings account (do not ever ever ever ever let a side piece know about that account), you can move out on your own, buy a car, go on a vacation, or be able to whatever else.

Take the job and stack your money. You can still use your mornings to look for other jobs. It's not like you need to sleep 12-16 hours a day. .

This, I work nights every other month (1 month 7 to 7 in the day, then 1 month 7 to 7 over night) when I'm on nights the most I ever sleep is 5-6 hours.

It's alright once you get used to it and you should still have time to look for something better.

When I was in college I worked nights as a security guard. 11pm-7am. My job was easy and gave me a chance to get some serious time to study. In the mornings I had classes and depending on the day I was done by noon.
