Crazy we got 28 replies to this thread and a sticky, but seemingly very few people who have actually watched this yet.

Besides the setting, this was a meh movie throughout. A meandering film that leads to nowhere and has an unsatisfying ending. There were no twists or surprises with the plot.

A good story/premise is buried somewhere, but this was not the film that brought it out. Pretty easy to see why this one went straight to Netflix instead of theaters.

expected a more fleshed out story seeing how that joint was two hours.....where/how did the goddess come from? totally ignored most back stories...

I got about an hour in, I love the direction and setting, and the Wicker Man homage, but it was so drab, and lifeless. It just seemed stuck for the first hour, and didn't really have any forward motion to the pacing and plotting.

The first hour was really boring. I was checking my phone a lot.

But the second hour was pretty insane. (@re'up )

Still wouldn't say it was good movie though.

I did think it was stunning to look at. especially in 4K, shyt was just gorgeous.

Some gorgeous shots, and interesting, grotesque unsettling images and scenes, but as a whole movie, I can't call it very good. Muddled, overlong, pacing is too slow. We may have hit a bad streak in the kind of avant garde horror that resurged in 2015/2016, with

It Follows
Green Room
The Witch

These movies, like Hold The Dark, are grim, overlong and under/overplotted, they are a chore to finish, despite some great direction and acting.

another Netflix original with promise that ultimately ends up being meh. That's their model, I guess.

Evans certainly has a feel for mise-en-scene, but lacks any sort of touch for character arcing and storytelling - this film merely exists in the frame, and not anywhere else.

I see a previous post stating folks will dig this if they're into "paganism and the occult", but I was left with an empty stomach; there was no overbearing sense of dread, where the foreboding builds and builds until you don't even come to the realization you haven't come up for air, and there was no path that led you to a rumination about mysticism.

At first I thought this was just ok. Didn't care much for the first hour but I really liked how intense and esoteric the 2nd half was. Now I keep thinking about the film and it's themes and I'm starting to like it more and more. That ending shot was great. Sure it was long and had pacing issues, but the ending made it all worth it. I can see how people don't like this but I appreciate it for what it is.
