Learn and practice all your scales. Once you do that, you’ll understand chords better and structure.

And TAKE, YOUR, TIME. Learn slowly first and then build up your speed.

Chord progressions after that too

I play a few instruments and all I'll say is @Rozay Oro Learn to play what you like to hear and, sooner or later, the pieces will fall into place. There's no cheat code or anything like that

I want to do all that dope stuff you listed too. That’s why I chose acoustic because it’s just grab and play. No amp. I’m getting bored just doing spider exercises or strumming struggle chords lol.

As a beginner what else can I do or what’s attainable to feel like I’m progressing?

I won’t quit but I’m bored of just doing that. On a piano I can fool around with a scale and feel like I’m getting somewhere although super basic.
Recording yourself is the best way to track your progress. Use the audio as a study guide. Do this each month, for a year, until you get the sound that want.

First lesson I just learned to put my finger closer to me down first for chords and I got to practice 4 basic chords more. My dexterity is lacking. Brehette cool af, she a pro player so she do gigs here and New York. All the songs I want to learn are too advanced for me right now. D’Angelo and etc.

Creh likely hitting it with his thumb to maintain rhythm (like a metronome)

Along with your lessons, checkout Fender Play, they can help you with learning the basics.

They got hella songs and lesson especially for Acoustic finger-picking.

If you can, keep your guitar visible in your room, it'll tempt you to play
Try to play it everyday even if its a riff or a scale
Learn the natural scale it will help you know the fretboard
Also learn these shapes (chords)
b-maj7-pos-1.png
b-m7-pos-2.png

These shapes are movable and can be play down the fretboard
Major 7 and Minor 7, found in so many songs.

fachords.com is GOATED website for learning chords.

MODS can when get a subform or form for people learning to play instrument?:jbhmm:

I can't really play but i noodle around on the guitar sometimes.

Like anything, stay disciplined, stay focused, don't try to go too fast. If following video tutorials, go to the end first and see how they play. If you don't like what you hear choose a different tutorial. If you got a teacher, just follow what they say and again, try not to go too fast.

Fellow musician here!

A lot of dope advice on this thread

Focus first on technique than speed. Make sure you’re picking correctly. Place your fingers gently on the strings. Once you grasp all of this, pick up the pace.

Use music theory. As a guitarist, this is your guide, your instruction guide to follow. Don’t consume all at all once you’re stress yourself out :pachaha:

Experiment with different brand of strings.

Learn different scales and picking. Memorize the transition of notes within each scale. Create arpeggios from the notes in those notes as a little test.

Find the tabs of songs you want to play. Record yourself playing alongside songs. It’s gonna several takes for you to master, for me, it did.

Create your own signature

Last but not least — LISTEN to a lot of MUSIC! Sample various genres - Jazz, Rock, Blues, R&B, Hip Hop, Latin, African, etc.

Below I’m giving this website of various guitar techniques to discover such as Octaves, Hammer-ons, Economic Picking

Enjoy!

Cosign. Just like a pullup bar. You walk buy that thing 20 times a day, your bound to just get some reps in. You ain't gotta max out everyday but a few reps is good for you.

Experiment with different brand of strings.
Talk to me about strings.

I have some elixir strings on one of my guitars. I have some daddarios on another. And I have fender 10's and 11's on my other 2.

Now the elixirs imo suck. They were just some strings I needed quick when mine popped, I went to a local music store and that's what they had, imo a generic string. It tunes, it holds tune, cuts hard on the callouses and it's more hard or harsh string on my fingers than any other brand string that I have.

School me on strings.

I learned how to play a few years ago from YouTube guitar teacher Mart Schwartz/Marty Music. Best online teacher by far. He breaks everything down with slow repetitions and explanations.

Can't stress this enough. Most music stores don't set up instruments before they put them up on the wall, so you have people buying and taking home instruments that are all out of wack. Every time I walk into guitar center I see this happening and its crazy that the employees don't tell people about proper instrument setups, sh*t is wild.

Fresh strings + Setup 👍
Most of the time those sales reps don't even know nothing about an instrument :snoop:

I get most are just looking for a job, but I feel like anybody selling something should know the basics at minimum. If a beginner don't do research on their own or have somebody with them that knows better, they can easily get steered wrong :why:

They good or nah?
