I was thinking 13 myself, I want the character to go through a lot of changes and do things he never would of done had he not left his self isolating environment. But I dunno, 13 might be a little too young. Maybe 15 or 16 so he could better pass as an adult.

The age would depend on what kind of situations you want the character to go through, but then again, you can have a 13 year old going through some shyt that would stress out a 19 year old, and that would only amplify the intensity and raise the stakes.

shyt just follow your artistic integrity breh :win:

Yeah, the 13 aspect was just to make the feats more extraordinary but I dunno if an older character wouldn't help to give him a more realistic sense of context. I might just flip a coin between 14 and 15 years old. :ehh:

I was looking everywhere for this thread, can we just make this the official writer's thread I was hoping to bounce ideas and facts around since I'm gettin back in the game with a few projects, I just like my shyt to be factually correct.

1. One of the main characters in a project moved from Oakland to the East Coast, for you Bay Area cats what neighborhoods in the O are kinda bordering between safe and affluent and all the way fukked up? I want the character to have come from a mixed environment, or even to have lived in the hood but go to a school in a good neighborhood not too far away?

2. What's a good name and background for a black international jewel thief?

3. What's the best age for a main character in a coming of age book geared towards teens and young adults?

1. Not from the Bay, so I can't really help you there.

2. I chose names for my characters from here:

1000 Most Popular Names of the 2000s top baby names - Baby2see.com

Gives the top 1,000 names for girls/boys through each decade

3. Personally, I'd go for 16.

Eagles, Canes, Kliq, Sixers
my seed in your stream
this climax I unleash
the cream always rises
daydreams so I wont sleep
come taste the batter
lick forth from the spoon
would you prefer it to drink
or to be stored in your womb
the fruit of the vine
a strong harvest indeed
an over flooding of the fields
nutrients are moved in the stream
soaking in to make your soil more rich
when the spring arrives with growth
the sweat of the brow will be good
it began with the sewing of my seed
I would bring forth more if I could
but that would be irresponsible....

2. Don't worry about his race, just come up with a dope name. Like The Lighting Thief or Ghost Cat. Some shyt like that.

3. Freshmen in Highschool is ideal.

Nah, race is important in this regard. I want to make movies with main characters that just so happen to be black. I dunno if I want him to be a West African that migrated to London or an African American that had a diplomat for a father and was able to travel and gain an appreciation for the arts and fine culture. All the suave international characters are always white, gotta switch that up.

I was thinking freshman/soph too, but for some reason 8th grade middle schooler also sounds good given the potential situations. I'll give an example, his older brother gets him a prostitute so he can lose his virginity. I dunno if I want him to look more of age like 16 or 17 so she won't be so inclined to question his age or if I should make him 13-14 and have her not even give a shyt to make it all the more amazing he's gettin his first piece of ass from a grown woman. I'm honestly just gonna flip a coin on it cuz both seem like equally compelling trajectories.

Go with the middle schooler thing. Can't remember the last time that was done. Make him 15/16 since thats a relatable age when it comes to losing ones virginity

Exactly. That's what has me thinking that, not to mention I think a younger character going through adult situations might endear younger readers to get into the book while older readers can also gain an appreciation for it. The issue is making it realistic as well as entertaining and insightful for the reader.
