Everybody knows about Spielberg practically help direct Poltergeist, but couldn't get the credit because he was contracted to another studio.

Are there any other movies where you think it was a secret co-director in the mix

im starting to think The Deer Hunter did

Michael Cimino never reached that height of creativity again

he did have a co writer (Deric Washburn) that he worked with

the story according to Cimino goes that while Cimino was scouting for filming locations for the film, Deric worked on the script but when Cimino got back and read the script, he said he couldn't believe what he wrote. He claimed Deric said he couldn't take the pressure and had to go home. then Cimino fired him

Cimino then said he wrote the entire script himself

but Deric said otherwise

he said him and Cimino worked on the script for 3 days on the plot of the movie. he said he had a whole month to get the script squared away

Deric said when the script was finished and he met with Cimino and his producer, they told him to "fukk off" and fired him

but because Cimino never, ever reached that height again as a director, i firmly believe he had help a tremendous amount of help with this film

dude had one movie that was a masterpiece and then he fell completely off the map

like he didn't even come close to reaching that height in that capacity again

Have you ever seen the documentary on the making of Heaven’s Gate?

It was a huge disaster for UA.

They went way over budget. Cimino would do things like wait hours to shoot so a cloud would move onto the frame.

yeah, the doc was better than the film

that's a really well done documentary and it's interesting to see the long term effect that movie had on not only Cimino's career, but Hollywood as a whole

i think that what it all comes to down is, Michael was trying to do too much, too soon and he needed help

and honestly, he wasn't really a director, dude went to MSU and Yale and majored in graphic arts, he was an art student

which makes even more sense when you look the landscapes in all of his movies, all of his movies had some of the best backgrounds of the West (Wyoming, Utah, Arizona)

although, some of the Deer Hunter was filmed in the East, (PA)

Return of the Jedi - George Lucas
I think Richard Marquand was brought on to help the acting and story portions while Lucas focused on the more technical side of things

This is just a theory

Deer Hunter felt like a Francis Ford Coppola film. I wonder if he helped in some capacity
