That is exactly what happened. Dude in front of me got in over his head and I went down trying to avoid him. I had been riding for less than 2 months. Stupid stupid move but it really humbled me. Riding can go to shyt in an instant so you have to be careful. All the more reason to take it slow. Better to learn how to ride on a 250 so you can actually be confident + safe on a 600 than wrap a 600 within your first year and be scared off of it.

Malta what do you ride?

Lot of terrible advice

Your first bike shouldn't be a fast sportsbike. That is like learning to drive in a Ferrari.

Take the MSF BRC. Its a beginners course that will teach you the basics on how to ride a motorcycle and let you see if you are really cut out for it (some people just aren't).

Budget for gear. Don't even look at bikes until you have a helmet, armored jacket, gloves and boots. I would get a summer jacket and just layer up when its colder.

For your first bike get a 250. If you like sport bikes get a Ninja 250 or a CBR250R. Theyre both like $4K new and literally perfect to learn on. Or if youre scared of dropping them get a used one, or a used Ninja 500 or GS500. Actually used is probably better cause then you can sell for what you pay. Ride the little 250 for a good 2 years before you upgrade. Do some track days. Practice emergency maneuvers. Learn how to ride.

People think riding a motorcycle is just buying an R1 and wheelieing out of the dealership. fukk that. shyt is life or death. But its fun as hell. I've been down twice already in 6 months of riding, both completely my fault. My bike is a little too much for me (Ninja 650). It def pays to do it right, because if you do it wrong and fukk up you might not get a second chance. But when you get it right, its worth it

all want is a duke 200 and call it a day.

That sucks, atleast you could walk away from it. I used to ride with other people when I was younger and had way too many close calls that would result in death or wheelchairs.

Right now, Im bikeless but Im considering getting a new one before July. The bikes I've owned in the past though were -

2002 CBR 600 F4i
2002 GSXR-750
02 R1
05 R1 Raven edition

I want one of those BMW 1000RRs :krs:, but too expensive for something I'd only use 4-5 months out of a year. If I get anything, it'll probably just be another R1, Im fond of them.

Ive gotten many recommendations to go with the CBR250R as my first bike this Summer. Any word of advice on recommended brands/models for gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, etc.) and how much I should be dropping for each?

I would go with a used Ninja. You are going to drop your bike, it will hurt more to drop a new one

For gear, I have a Scorpion EXO 750 for a helmet in this color

I have 2 pairs of gloves... Cortech Scarabs for winter and some Alpinestars shyts for spring/fall/summer. I would stay away from perforated gloves

For jackets I have all kinds of leathers :steviej: I do have a couple of textile jackets too. I would get an armored multi layer textile jacket. Heres mine

I wear regular jeans. I also wear construction boots. I would get legit motorcycle jeans & boots though.

Try helmets on at a local motorcycle shop. You gotta get a good fit. It should be tight enough where it doesn't move if you shake your head, but loose enough so it doesn't hurt

All that liter bike talk sounds good till you get that insurance quote :merchant:

If I got a liter bike it would be something mild like an SV1000S or that new CB1000R naked bike. For the next bike I am pretty sure I am getting + building up an SV650 though

I'm leaning towards old reliable R1, but I like that Ninja ZX-14

I been looking around and I wanted to get a 2008 and up Kawasaki ZX-10R.

But now I'm leaning towards this bike because it just looks so out of the ordinary. The Ducati Diaval

Yea I like the ZX14 and the Busa. I was really thinking about getting a ZZR1200 to ride w/wifey on but we are just gonna get a car instead

Naw, I have owned a bike before. I still got all of my gear too. I just been wanting to get a bike again so bad. I know that the price of the ZX-10R I can handle. The Ducati has so many nice features and just so different. I haven't seen a Ducati Diaval here in Birmingham. Either one would definitely be a step up from the 600 I had before but I think I'm ready for it.

Diavels are pretty rare + expensive. Very nice bikes though, esp if you will be using it mainly on the highway. ZX10R, you will never get to use more than like 25% of its potential on the street

I hear the new ZX6R is really nice too. Looks just like a ZX10R

Yeah, the Diaval's are expensive but if I was to get one I would be able to pay it off in 2 years if not sooner. The ZX-10R I would pay off in a year easy. I figured that since I'm not trying to get a brand new ZX-10R, it would be cheaper than getting a brand new 636cc ZX-6R. Plus I would have more money to upgrade it. I want a black one so I can do a black and gold color scheme. Something like this.....

If you can't drive manual in a car, don't bother trying to teach yourself.

Im familiar with a clutch in a car (trucks too, been driving stick since 15), but I have zero motorcycle experience. I assume its way different from riding a bike :skip:

-Whats the learning curve if you're familiar with a clutch already?
-How does somebody go about legally owning one (motor cycle licenses/insurance/etc, is it the same process as with an automobile)?
-As a 20 year old, is the insurance going to be murder? Is it even worth it :hamster:
