Denzel basically plays similar alpha males with similar mannerisms in almost all his movies. It is foolish for anyone to deny this. In Training Day Denzel was the alpha male cop with a very strong personality / mannerisms. The same applies to Denzel in Inside Man. The same applies to Denzel in X (Alpha Male street thug to Alpha Male Malcolm X). The same applies to Denzel in Fallen (alpha male / genius cop). The same applies to Denzel in American Gangster (Alpha Male Drug Lord).

I get what the O.P. is saying, but you gotta understand that black leading roles are typecasted for box office reasons to ensure sales.....Does Denzel have range? I think so.

Have we seen a lot of it? Not really.

Exactly!!! And Cuba did a great job portraying him. As a matter of fact, Cuba is highly underrated but that's another subject...

The movie did not do well at the theaters and that's all execs look at...

Imagine if there was a magical pirate movie starring Denzel or Cuba?

Who would honestly check for that except a handful of moviegoers?

Denzel is awesome first of all and he plays the cool guy who can be intense when needed, but is there anything with him where he plays a completely different character? Where he has an accent or is unrecognizable as himself. Most paid actors end up being typecast and do the same roles over and over so there is nothing wrong with it especially if you get consistent work.

But i was watching a bit of safe house and this thought just came through my head and there has to be something where Denzel tried to challenge himself. I googled it myself and came across Malik Yoba saying he doesn't think Denzel has range...thoughts?

It's a fair question. Denzel is a great actor, and a GOAT contender, but he indeed doesn't often alter physical mannerisms when playing a role. That said, he's a true professional, has great emotional range, and is an undeniable screen presence (and you always buy that he is who he's playing). Can he do what Gary Oldman did in True Romance? Hell no. Not in a million years. He doesn't have that manneristic plasticity. Jamie Foxx at his best might be the only black actor able to go head to head with Streep/DDL/Oldman in that respect, and he doesn't possess Denzel's raw theatrical genius. Acting doesn't really get better than Denzel in The Hurricane.
