Didn’t know they have Groupons for that. Are the Groupons offered through clubs/courses or individual pros?

So you recommend not to use YouTube videos for guidance yet until I get some initial lessons? Or do you recommend holding off on videos altogether?

Yes, I've seen them before. Your local city golf course will also typically have group lessons that are much more affordable than hiring a pro individually (insanely expensive and very few actually do it).

Everyone is different and your learning style may be different than mine. Someone mentioned it above but there's nothing wrong with videos to give you the basic fundamental understanding/mechanics of the swing. But I just caution ppl starting out not to get too deep into them b/c oftentimes people on youtube are more interested in having a swing that LOOKS great but isn't very repeatable by most amateur golfers. And then people end up spending hours and hours trying to make their swing look like someone else's when they have different skill levels, body types, coordination, flexibility etc. And the only way you'll test that knowledge is by hitting balls. There are a lot of golfers who know all the theory but can't play for shyt. Don't become that guy.

SOmeone mentioned the machines - they're talking about video and launch monitors. I wouldn't bother with that until you have the basic swing down. Any readings/data you get right now is useless since you're just learning. You don't want to buy equipment based on info taken right now.

If you're really serious you can easily record yourself with a cell phone. Just have it set back 10-15 feet away so you can see your entire swing. Hit some shots and knowing what happened to the ball you may be able to isolate some weaknesses in your swing.

Golf can be pricey but it's like anything else, if you're smart you can mitigate some of that. I never buy brand new clubs. If you want to get cheaper rates for courses, most will have twilight hours that are reduced (after 2pm). Also try teeoff.com or golfnow.com and you can find discounted rates (not as much as in years past but you can still find deals).

Also spend a lot of time chipping/putting around the green. That's where you're going to spend most of your time and where you'll lose a lot of strokes.

Get a groupon for a cpl hours from a pro just so you can get the fundamentals of

1. Stance/alignment
2. Grip
3. Basic understanding of the mechanics of a swing

Sometimes they even have group lessons. It’s a minor investment but will more than offset all the money you’d spend at the range trying to teach yourself a swing and most likely ingraining very bad swing patterns that you’ll never get beyond.

Even if you never get another lesson in your life I would definitely get one for the initial introduction. So much of golf is feel. Videos etc are more useful to more experienced players who want to focus on very specific parts of the game/swing. It’s hard to hear someone else tell you what a certain swing move will feel like.

This is advice that is easier said than done, but when it comes to the driving range it’s fun to do but try not to get in the habit of going there and just hitting 200 balls. Once you have a basic understanding of the swing, I would get into habit of only taking a few clubs to every range visit. It will focus your efforts and you’re likely to isolate issues when you’re swinging the same club.

Top Golf is the furthest I’ve gone in playing.

My pop used to try to get me to play, and my uncle who plays, would always tell me its a great networking sport. Wasn’t and not really interested in it, though. It’s an expensive game, and with all money being poured into my daughter and her extracurriculars, I don’t have the funds to allocate towards it.

Yea my real estate broker tried to get me into playing golf since it’s the best networking sport.

This is facts if you get involved with any charity tournaments or maybe even something from work or school.

I played in a scramble "tournament" and was grouped with my high school principal, a state senator and an NBA ref.

I play off and on now but used to play regularly. It's the most relaxing 'sporting' past‐time. When ur out on the course it's like all your issues outside of the course disappear. It's a cerebral sport that requires patience and coordination which is what drew me to it in college. That and the fact that I knew I'd be working for old white men in corporate America and it may favorably position me if I could play well. When I'm out regularly I'm about a 13 handicap. I play a lot like Phil

What’s the name?
Winston Lake..

also.. Don't waste money on a driving range..

Better to just go out and play, especially being you'll do alot more than driving no matter what..

I used to set a small waste can by my patio screen door, and chip off the carpet into it.. there's a few more things you can do to improve your game around your crib, if you're somewhat dedicated to playing..

Watch a beginners' video and get the basics and then go out and hit the range. Experiment with your grip from weak, neutral to strong. Made a huge difference in my game when i switched to a strong grip which fit my swing the best.

This is probably why I need to invest in some lessons with a pro on the basics first. Folks I was with told me I needed to keep a relaxed grip and that a strong grip will mess up my swing. A pro would better be able to gauge that I guess.

That's a good route.

I fought a slice for the longest time and going to a strong grip allowed my wrist to catch up more consistently.
