Since a kid I had a fondness for the electric guitar = music instruments in general.

My first guitar was a black Ibanez Gio with single coils. I was hype as shyt getting this for my birthday! Used to bring this guitar everywhere with me to college. I mainly play by ear (consonant chords) that's how I learned to train myself. Didn't start getting into tabs until I took music classes and dealt with other experienced players.

You should learn playing vertically and horizontal. Learn many scales to develop arpeggios on your own; learn what a major and minor triad; learn techniques like octaves, etc.

The gear plays a pivot role. Change your pickups, replace your strings, get a trustworthy amp and analog pedals. One of my favorite effects is the chorus effect. Love how its modulates its sound.

Learn the difference between different guitar bodies and types of woods that affects its sound. The higher the string, the more string tension; looser the string, easier tension on the fingers.

Single coils are crystalline and treble. Humbuckers are warmer and thick. P90s are very versatile - one of the best coils if you to try different styles.

My second guitar I have now is a Fender Stratocaster American. Bought from a homie. The pickups need to be fixed, I want to replace this with a P-90 but may reconsider. The best Stratocasters are imported from Mexico or Japan.

I had a bass guitar for a while. The bass is the bridge between rhythm and harmony. Ever listened to a song without a bassline? Sounds like something is missing lmao. The cornerstone besides the drums.

It's a pretty serious hobby of mine, and comes first in life for me before a lot of other things. I've probably spent like $15k on guitars, amps, and gear over the years. My main guitar is a late 70's Yamaha SG, a discontinued model imported from Japan that they used to call the "Les Paul Killer," and I play through 2 big half-stack tube amps with a huge selection of effects pedals. I mostly play heavier psychedelic rock music.

You don't need an expensive instrument to start learning. You may not stick with it and you will have wasted your money.
Professional instruments are overpriced as fukk and they get away with it by appealing to musicians' egos.
It's the same snake oil shyt that comes with the price of any "premium" product.
Now there are indeed levels of instrument quality.
If you've become good enough to start joining bands and doing gigs, you will need to upgrade your gear.
To start learning, there is definitely a market of well made, functional instruments that wont break you.

Harley Benton is a brand made specifically for this market.
You can snag a HB for less than $200, and most of that is shipping because they're based in Germany.
Or you can grab a Bullet Strat from Fender's Squier line from Guitar Center or order it from Sweetwater for less than $200.

After you learn to actually play the guitar, then you can think about which style of guitar suits the kind of player you are.
But don't put the cart before the horse.
I have a great Fender Strat I bought out of a pawn shop for $100 and I have a Harley Benton Telecaster.
Guitar is not my first instrument. I only play casually and am trying get better.
