That one was a missed call by the ref imo. I recall that one or another very similar/more egregious one early in the season (had to have been around 2017) when he was still getting the timing right on the move. Once he nailed it consistently, it was the gather stepback you now see Tatum, Maxey, Luka, and damn near all guards do in 2024. But at the time all renditions of it were controversial.
Another one he pioneered but messes up the timing a lot was the gather euro. Giannis has become the poster-boy for that move now. Speaking of the euro step, 10-12 years ago CP3 said he never heard of nor did a eurostep when he was in high school/college but like wild fire it became a thing in the league and was amazed that kids were now doing it easily. So natural evolution, certain movies just need 1 or 2 pioneers and it becomes an essential skill.
