That would be extremely pathetic if they tried to.
No it wouldn’t because

1. The hypocrisy so obvious

2. The backlash was personal. People in the media, actual professionals covering the NBA, were questioning his character.

And what if the Lakers are still the better team?

It's a tremendous risk that the Lakers are taking here. Lebron's got 56,000 minutes on his tires. That's around when Kobe started breaking down, and LeBron just had his first serious injury. Now we're talking about a (likely) capped-out Lakers squad 3 years from now with an injury-prone Davis and washed Kemba/Butler vs. Zion, another top 5-10 pick, Ingram, Ball, and possibly another big time free agent? Man, that's a heavy roll of the dice.
