It still took 61 years to completely outlaw it in British territories, and 35 years just to stop British involvement in the slave trade. Somersett's Case meant nothing for the territories and colonies, just for England itself.

never the less it seems to go against the idea that slavery would have lasted longer under British rule. many historians have cited the issue of slavery as being one of the factors that lead to the Revolutionary War

Him ignoring the contribution of Colonialism to the modern wars in Africa->

So the British didnt under develop the Southern Sudan relative to Northern Sudan?
So the British didnt favor the Baganda in Uganda to the disenfranchisement of other groups?
and the Belgians didnt favor the Tutsi over the Hutu?

I mean these are just a few examples

Thats not to say that everything was rosy before the Colonialist arrived but they certainly stirred things up in way that inflamed tensions

then call a spade a spade and don't blame colonialism

He would take issue with your comments about colonialism. Two cheers for colonialism - SFGate I was just fukking with you.

i dont co-sign the title but i agree with the analysis, ultimately its about institutions and culture or lack of that will determine the fate of nation, not the kindness or lack of kindness of european nations

i think the mentality (that the former colonial power owes you) makes the victims of colonialism weak

for example ive been watching south sudan very closely and i very much cheer lead for them, i just made a thread about it http://www.the-coli.com/higher-lear...c-video]-south-sudan-anthem.html#.T_s2cpGrGSo but if the southern sudanese go around holding the british or arabs responsible for their problems they will fail as a nation, no one should be held responsible for south sudan except south sudan

I disagree. The world only appeared to be better under colonialism because the europeans build in the places they colonize in order to extract wealth in the form of resources. What they do build and teach functions mainly to serve the empire. It's all about controlling resources.

Their true religion is commercialism cloaked behind the Roman Catholic faith and it's sects of Protestants. They secretly enslave nations thru subversion and their hidden commercial empire. The MO is the establishment of port cities. The colonizing commercial empires distrust for one another creates wars. In these wars, the natives are pit against one another, functioning as allies of warring European nations fighting to maintain their commercial interests. (you'll find that in the end the host nations is destroyed or dissolved and the Europeans come to dominate via treaties signed amongst themselves.

With the extracted wealth they enrich their european homelands and fuel empire building. Eventually consuming the resources of their host nation, they migrate to new unexploited lands to lay waste to, a la The British in India or the Latin\Roman Catholic Church in Latin America.

Just my opinion.

But its not an all or nothing argument

Saying it contributed doesn't mean it was the only contributor. The way he juxtaposed the amount of people killed by the colonial powers with killing in the modern African wars implied that you could regard these wars separately from the events that preceded them.

I just don't understand what it means to say the world was better or worse with or without colonialism. it's like religion: it's inseparable from our history. it happened and here we are
