STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden released on Sunday a grainy photo of a mysterious vessel in Stockholm's archipelago, as the military hunted for a foreign submarine or divers in the country's biggest such mobilization since the Cold War.

The search in the Baltic Sea less than 30 miles (50 km) from Stockholm began on Friday and reawakened memories of the final years of the Cold War when Sweden repeatedly sought out suspected Soviet submarines along its coast with depth charges.

The military showed one picture of what appeared to be a craft surrounded by white ripples. The witness who took the photograph said the vessel then submerged -- one of three sightings that the military said were credible reports.

The Swedish armed forces have consistently labeled the their hunt one of investigating "foreign underwater activity" but elaborated on what that might entail on Sunday.

"It could be a submarine, or a smaller submarine," Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad told a news conference. "It could be divers using some form of moped-like underwater vehicle and it could be divers that don't have any business on our territory."

Grenstad said the sightings had taken place in "an area that is of interest to a foreign power", but added he was not in a position to link the observed activity to any particular nation.

"This does not belong to us. It is a foreign vessel and we have no indications that there would be any civilians involved in underwater activity,” he said.

The incident comes amid rising tension with Russia among the Nordic and Baltic states -- most of them European Union members -- over Moscow's involvement in the Ukraine crisis. Finland last week accused the Russian navy of interfering with a Finnish environmental research vessel in international waters.

Reported sightings of one man dressed in black wading through waters led to speculation of Russian special forces in the archipelago, normally a popular holiday destination consisting of thousands of small islands.

EMERGENCY FREQUENCY
The Swedish military has said the initial information about suspicious underwater activity came from a trustworthy source, without providing details, and that more than 200 military personnel were involved in the search.

The Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, citing unidentified sources with knowledge of the hunt, said it began after a radio transmission in Russian on an emergency frequency.

Further encrypted radio traffic from a point in the archipelago and the enclave of Kaliningrad, home to the Russian Baltic fleet's headquarters, was intercepted on Friday evening after the Swedish search started, the newspaper said.

Grenstad said the armed forces had not received any information about a distress signal.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday there were no emergencies in the Baltic involving its vessels.

"Russian Navy ships and submarines are fulfilling their duties in the world ocean waters in accordance with the plan," Interfax news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying. "There are no extraordinary, let alone emergency, situations involving Russian warships."

Countries in the Baltic Sea region have become increasingly wary of Russia's military ambitions since Moscow annexed Ukraine's Crimea region in March following the overthrow of Kiev's pro-Moscow president by protesters.

Last month, Sweden said two Russian warplanes entered its air space, calling the intrusion a "serious violation".

Should the present search find proof of foreign military activity in Swedish coastal waters it will represent the first real test of Prime Minister Stefan Lofven's center-left minority government less than three weeks after it took office.

In 1981, a Soviet submarine known under its Swedish designation U137 was stranded deep inside Swedish waters not far from a major naval base in the neutral country, sparking intense suspicion about the scale and motives of such incursions.

The Hunt for Red October 2014 or Whiskey on the Rocks part 2. :salute:

I guess nobody told comrade Putin that Sweden is not the Ukraine. Sweden's military is perfectly capable of defending their boarders and can handle anything thrown at them.

Sure thing yeah but even if they don't manage to find the threat it has still been a fairly succesful intelligence operation. I mean this archipelago is dead ass close to our capital so just having a probable russian submarine lurking around is insane. Whatever it was will not return now. Russia has denied any activity in our waters so it will be funny if we do in fact find something cus then we might as well eliminate it.

STOCKHOLM—Swedes awoke Monday to headlines that could have been lifted straight out of the 1980s as the Nordic country’s hunt for foreign submarines off its east coast went into a fourth day.

Late Sunday the country’s navy presented a grainy picture of what appeared to be some kind of craft moving among the islands of the Stockholm archipelago, which stretches some 80 kilometers east of the capital.

The picture, taken by a member of the public, wasn’t of good enough quality for the object to be clearly identified but it showed something elongated and white in the water with a smaller black object pointing out of its upper side.

Swedish Navy Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad told a news conference that it is likely that the picture shows what he termed “foreign underwater activity” but declined to say which country might be behind the suspected territorial violation.

Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said the navy hadn’t yet verified the nature of the activity so couldn’t say who might be responsible.

Nevertheless, suspicions were immediately directed at Russia after a series of recent violations of Swedish airspace by Russian war planes. The accidental grounding of a Soviet military submarine remains a regular topic of conversation here even though it happened as far back as 1981.

The grounding of that submarine, U137, on rocks off the Swedish town of Karlskrona 33 years ago led to a standoff between Stockholm and Moscow. Sweden’s then Prime Minister Thorbjorn Falldin issued a now famous order to the Swedish military to “hold the border” as Soviet ships approached to support the stricken submarine, which was ultimately escorted back out to international waters.

A Russian Defense Ministry spokesman put forward an alternative theory on the origin of the possible submarine, telling local news agencies on Monday that it was most likely Dutch.

“In the interests of lowering tensions in the Baltic Sea and saving the money of Swedish taxpayers, we would recommend they ask the commanders of the Netherlands navy for an explanation,” he said.

The Russian spokesman added that over the past week a Dutch submarine had been conducting tactical maneuvers near Stockholm and those included emergency surfacing, photos of which appeared in the Swedish press.

The Dutch defense ministry said there was no Dutch submarine off the Swedish coast over the weekend. However, there was a Dutch submarine in Stockholm last week as part of an annual exercise in Nordic waters, but it left for Tallinn on Thursday.

The sightings being investigated in Sweden didn’t begin until after Thursday, with two on Friday and one on Sunday.

The current escalation of tension around the Baltic sea is an early test Mr. Hultqvist in his new role as defense minister, appointed after Swedes voted in a new government in September.

Swedish public radio said Swedish military boats could be seen Monday patrolling close to the part of the archipelago where the most recent of three suspected submarine sightings had occurred.

The navy said it was continuing its operations offshore with “undiminished strength” on Monday, Swedish public radio reported.

The submarine hunt comes after a series of Swedish airspace violations by Russian aircraft, the most serious of which came mid-September. Sweden’s then Foreign Minister Carl Bildt lodged a formal complaint with the Russian embassy in Stockholm after two warplanes flew south of the Swedish island of Oland. Mr. Bildt said it was the only time in his eight years as foreign minister that he had to call in an ambassador to issue such a protest.

The Baltic states are also on high alert after an Estonian intelligence officer was detained by Russian authorities on suspicion of spying last month.

Estonian officials said the officer, Eston Kohver, was working on the Estonian side of the border and was snatched by individuals who came from Russia.

Russia, meanwhile, said Mr. Kohver was arrested while on a spying mission within its borders.
