I just started fishing and picking up random shells and stuff on the ground. Whatever I didn't have at the museum like a fossil, I would go take it there and sell the rest. I upgraded my items to the better ones too. My island has a mountain that I can't climb due to not having a ladder so that limits my resources. The best thing is when you get the crossing stick. Make it much easier.
