That sounds nice on paper and theory but in practice racism overrides class solidarity. Why do you think poor whites were willing to die for rich whites to own slaves? Why did union whites resist allowing blacks into unions when there is a greater strength in numbers?
Tribalism is engrained in the human psyche and rural whites would rather see white supremacy to be emboldened than for them to receive free healthcare or more affordable housing.
Rural whites see rich whites as their class more than blacks or other minorities in the same economic bracket
The FDR consensus began falling apart with desegregation. The New Deal was all good till those programs were extended to black people. After that, they were programs for undeserving moochers.
I have not been convinced of the economic anxiety argument. Majority of whites vote for whoever is the most hostile to what they consider the “others”.
I hope the whites can prove me wrong though. I hope that a Bernie Sanders type of candidate comes along and is able to win over the whites which material benefits, but I doubt it. I know too much about the Whites.
