Everyone was predicting the Celtics and Sixers had next with their young cores. And all the chatter was that KD was going to the Knicks in 2018 when LeBron made his move. It wasn't about seeing the future. It was about being shrewd and making the move a year earlier than when it would be obvious.
If Bron left the East in 2019 after KD/Kyrie signed with Brooklyn, Giannis winning MVP, and the Celtics/Sixers improving, he would have looked like he was running away from the East just as it was producing tougher competition. He just made the move a year earlier before those Eastern Conference teams rose. It allowed him to look like he was going to the big bad west when in reality he was going to a conference that was about to fall off and be weaker than the East for the first time in 20 years.

But I thought the Kyrie leaving in 2017 thing was partly about “him not wanting to be stuck there when Bron left.” If the streets were saying Bron was leaving around summer 2017, that would be before the Kyrie/KD all-star game hallway meeting. And KD could have gone to Portland if he wanted to stay west. Harden, Kawhi and Westbrook also went east although Kawhi came back.

It has dropped off but even at 40 he will be relatively athletic and that old man strength hit different.the only problem with this is his athleticism HAS dropped off.

He’s still 73% at the rim and has 20 dunks this season. We see his declined first step, lateral movement, decreasing foul rate, and motor but he’s still a beast.
He’s too skilled and too smart. His touch and dexterity at the basket, his passing ability, his ability to post up, his size in transition, dude is now a high volume 40% 3PT shooter with deep range, has that innate ability to control a game on both ends.
