I've heard it said before that the reason there isn't European style social democracy in the US is due to white people not wanting to share with minorities. I have read a study regarding the high level of "deaths of despair" among white males - one of the top reasons was just the perception that black people are doing better. It is definitely deep.

That being said, I'd caution against painting with too broad a stroke. Bernie was a popular candidate, and had millions of white people supporting him, and one of his major policy positions was healthcare for all. Yet, he was sabotaged by the DNC. The major issue is that this is a hyper capitalistic society, where care of its citizens getting in the way of profits is always going to illicit resistance - from both parties. The main issue here is the legalized bribery of politicians by donors. They work for their interests against that of the common person. Lest someone think I'm a bother sider - Republicans are orders of magnitude worse, and any chance of eventually getting to a place of more equitable distribution of resources lies with supporting progressive candidates to change the DNC from within and grassroots movements as third parties are not viable in the US at this time.
