You can already tell where this is heading. Police protect their own. Police will do everything in their power to have her end up with the best possible outcome. The thin blue line protects police, often at the expense of justice. The real issue isn't the outcome of this case. It is that the police, time and time again, subvert the natural process of justice. There are two justice systems in this country. One for police and one for everyone else. And this is the real problem. Police cannot investigate themselves. But instead of pursuing justice, i.e. do what they normally do, they instead pursue innocence. This is the real issue. Police officers lie to convict random Americans. What do you think they are willing to do to protect one of their own. And, if that wasn't enough, there are citizens who fully buy into the notion that Police Officers are endowed with greater inclinations of morality and honesty. So they automatically believe anything that police officers say.
Anybody who understands the way the U.S. government is organized and the history of the U.S. government will understand that our government is based on checks and balances. This is what was written about our government in Federalist Paper #51,
It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.
Even back then the founders of the government realized that power must be checked, or else it would be abused. It's why instead of having a king we have 3 branches of government. But when it comes to police no one entity exists to check their power. The police, lie and get raises. The police break the law and keep their job. They murder unarmed civilians and they get a severance package. Until an entity exists to check the Power of police innocent Black will continue to die. It is a tragedy that Botham Shem Jean died. It's an even greater tragedy that he won't be the last.
