loved how it looked...the whole party scene was dope...made me feel like i was really in Oakland

wasn’t Jeffrey’s best performance but i won’t trip on it too much...I always appreciate a good hood flick...specially now a days

Wouldve liked more TQ and Stunna scenes (they were my favorite people in this) rather than flashbacks or the Army homie. But it was all good...good movie

This shyt was boring af. Coulda been a lot better needed some more creativity somehow in the story. There wasnt really anything in the story to draw me in
I agree with @FruitOfTheVale all the characters are really the same from the flashbacks to the adult scenes.

Surprised at how bad Jeffrey Wright was in this. Dude normally disappears in his roles, no matter what. Here he reminded me of Key or Peele playing a street dude in one of their sketches lol

Yes sir...even had the nikka working at Sheik at Eastmont all the actors pulled it off. Jeffrey Wright reminded me of this OG knock that was a crazy ass killa.

The cinematography and the performances (other than Jeffrey Wright's) were good, the film itself though was . The film lingered waaaaay too long on shyt that didn't mean shyt in the scheme of the movie, the story is extremely cookie cutter with no real payoff for sticking with it.

The rap subplot shyt was half-baked then a mf, the flashback scenes with his pops was nothing but exposition that could've easily been implied in the prison scenes. The whole film is caught up in trying to paint the picture of how a regular kid ends up doing life despite fighting to break the cycle but there's zero character development, the whole movie is basically one long flashback where we never actually see the main character (or any of the other characters for that matter) grow into anything different outside of deciding to be there for his son. Literally none of the other characters have an arc From a screenwriting POV this movie is terrible. The quality of the cast made it watchable - Ashton in particular is an excellent actor - but it went nowhere and had nothing interesting to say.

He far removed from that Peoples Hernandez role. Dont seem like he got that particular brand of chops in him no more. He was putting way too much sauce on it in this movie lol.

Right, like his acting as Peoples went beyond a classical acting approach and clearly showed he was around some NYC Dominicans at some point in his life. But while he was effortless in Shaft, here he was try hard to the extreme. Maybe he's only knowledgeable about NY and ignorant towards the Town lol. But it was probably the worst performance of his that I've seen and it took me out of the movie

But while he was effortless in Shaft, here he was try hard to the extreme. Maybe he's only knowledgeable about NY and ignorant towards the Town lol. But it was probably the worst performance of his that I've seen and it took me out of the movie

I enjoyed the movie. I think you saw the pros/cons of a talented but inexperienced director. He had some really good one take shots, but seemed to struggle with the actors a bit.

Still a decent watch.

Contrary to popular belief, I thought Jeffrey Wright and Ashton Sanders did a phenomenal job. My biggest concern is that Ashton will be tightcasted to this type of role when I see bigger. I dunno what yall saw but I liked the acting especially with Yahya Mateen Abdul. The ending was very symbolic, good solid flick. 6.7/10.

I'm not watching anything else with Ashton in it until he can prove to me he has another speed in acting.

I feel like that's due to tight casting. There's potential there. I wanna see dude play in a comedy opposite his serious roles.
