I thought the Cartel spared him and killed his boy?

And when they killed his boy the Don said "The only reason you are alive and he is not, is because I know how you are". Then later when The cartel sends a sniper after Gus people remember the Sniper was shook when Gus went out there in the open daring him to kill him. Everybody might have not feared Gus, but the people in the know where afraid of the consequences of killing him. I'm actually gonna be mad if that's not addressed before the end of the show. I have a hard time believing Walt can just get away with killing someone that the fukking cartel was afraid of murking.
