This project is cool. It feels a bit all over the place and low-rent like the Black Star album did. But I also like it more than the first Liberation album. Kweli is spitting, not the best batch from Madlib tho

it's because a lot of people don't even know it dropped. The only way ti legally listen to it is to sign up for a monthly subscription service called Luminary. It's not on any other streaming platforms and there are no physical copies. If you go on Talib's social media he's bickering with fans that are annoyed about it. It's 5 dollars a month and there's only 2 albums on there. This album and the most recent Black Star album. No download option so if you ever cancel the service you can't hear the album anymore.

And I just saw they've put "Midnight Miracle" and "Peoples Party" on Spotify now as well so there's even less reason to subscribe to Luminary. I've cancelled my subscription after this month :yeshrug:

We’ve got to vote with our wallets then. The fact that Vinyl sales have seen an upward trajectory in sales the past 5 years is a good sign, but its not enough.
I mean personally I don't know what else to do.

The vinyl numbers in the game are really strong right now. I guarantee if Talib did what Alchemist or Roc Marci do on their vinyl and merch drops that he'd sell that shyt out entirely and keep all of it. Clever items. Not just t-shirts and hoodies. Evidence just did a bunch of match books, eye drops, umbrellas, and coffee mugs. Alchemist just did some skate boards, trading cards, and ash trays. Roc Marci's done throw pillows and blankets. All this stuff sells out too.

Alc and the artists he's working with are making a healthy 6 figures on each of these project drops and they're just using a pretty generic Shopify platform.

Talib doesn't need to be with Luminary. I feel like he and Madlib could've done the same thing and made a cool 6 figs on this album. There's no way they're making a ton of money on Luminary on these drops.

Unless Luminary is paying upfront for exclusive rights...

I think it's bad business (from a consumer's perspective) to make people pay for products they may not want just to get one thing they do want.

Re: the first point, I guess. If Luminary paid a ton up front then good for Talib, and Luminary is definitely getting fukked on that deal. If they paid a ton to exclusively host Liberation 2 then they lost.

Actually I'm pretty sure they did pay up front for exclusive rights, because if they didn't then Talib would be really stupid, and I don't think he is. And that could also explain the lack of physical media.

Re: your last sentence, I couldn't agree more. I think it'd bad business and a bad look. It drives people fukking crazy (including myself) that a transaction never seems final anymore either. I'd rather drop 40 dollars for Liberation 2 on vinyl than have to pay 5 dollars every month for it, even just 4 months. That constant need to pester you every month to pay for content you already have downloaded is super annoying.

Damn shame Talib sullied his rep with his antics these past few years because I really enjoyed this and lyrically he was great.

Its bad marketing. I don't care if some1 from my top5 dropped a project on some obscure streaming platform; I'm not going out my way to check for it.

shower thought, why doesn't dave chappelle open up a record label with the money he has and sign free agent rappers?
Maybe because he doesn’t want to be a label executive?

He’s a stand up comedian. There’s literally NOTHING in the resume of Dave Chappelle that suggests he’d be successful at running a record label.
