There are aspects i really enjoy but other aspects i do not like and the latter is overpowering the stuff i enjoy.

  • Enjoy the mystery with Saga,
  • Love the investigations and talking to people
  • Like the general puzzle solving and exploration
  • Love how ambitious the game feels,
What i don’t love

  • The overall gameplay loop, exposition heavy scenes are hard to keep up with
  • Sometimes it feels like they are being quirky to be quirky, like twin peaks-ish
  • I’m not enjoying the combat, theres a certain level of jank to it im not feeling.
  • …continued: i hate how spongey the enemies are. All they had to do was mimic RE2/RE4, sometimes it takes like 6+ shots to bring down one person
  • Alan’s parts im kind of lost on, and they are fully abstract and meta as hell
My overall thoughts SO FAR, I 100% appreciate what the game is going for and I can see why its a 10/10 GOTY for a lot of people. It hits on a lot of interesting tv/writing tropes, especially the more niche David Lynch type stuff. The graphics are probably the best I’ve seen on console this gen, and there’s a ton of other stuff going for it.

I Just don’t know if its really hittin for me like other people. I’m very hot and cold on it at the moment, and getting colder. I kind of wish the actual Alan Wake aspect of the game didn’t exist and it was just a more spooky true crime game.
Sounds like you want the game to be more traditional, safe and generic

A lot of what you are criticizing the game for is for things that we probably have never seen a game do before and may not again

Gameplay loop seems almost indie. You've basically seen all the game has to offer encounter wise pretty early on. There's very little enemy variety. The presentation is doing some HEAVY lifting. The sound design is god tier. Honestly it might be 80% of why the game is so highly rated.

Too many cheap jump scares, too much backtracking, the combat is Alan Wake 1 to a T(Burn off the darkness, shoot, dodge, repeat), and the story is convoluted.

An okay game punching waaay above its weight due to having the best visual and sound design of the generation.

I will go back and say that this is valid for people not tapped into the alan wake universe, if you didn't play the 1st game or the DLC you legitimately have no chance of understanding his plot

But it's extremely rewarding if you are. They brought back the music of the game being hints at the story, the odes to twin peaks/stephen king, great acting, easter eggs everywhere, etc.

The amount of comparison to RE in this thread irks me because it's not like RE nor trying to be. It's a mix of the first game, silent hill, quantum break and control. The only thing it shares with RE is being a 3rd person shooter

I only bring up RE in comparison to its shooting, i acknowledged earlier that the games are really nothing a like nor was i really expecting them to be.

I guess you’re right in that I’d prefer a “safer more generic” crime game, but its not really everyday we get AAA detective/crime games with this kind of atmosphere.

Just started earlier and finished the talk show section. This is pure Remedy magic. All the nods to the first game and Control already

Can't wait to play this more. Sound design is incredible. Sam Lake is a genius

First boss wasn't that bad once I realized there's a melee attack. I had ran out of ammo and was just running around looking for more frantically lol he just needed a flashlight bonk to go down finally

The dodge is pretty easy to time. So far this is all the quirkiness of Remedy dialed up to 10 and I'm only like two hours in

These reviews are all over the place. People either love it or hate it:patrice:...After playing dead space was hoping this would give me the same feeling. But that shyt was intense and the combat was next level. I really enjoy investigative type games. Even point and click ones. But hate clunky combat and games that are deep just for the sake of being deep.

Damn. Hard to justify dropping 70 on a game I might hate. Was planning on taking some shrooms and running this all day. I still might though. Gonna contemplate for a few hours.

Would you guys say it's a chore to navigate around?....does it force you to move at a slow pace. I understand the combat is a bit clunky but are the actual player movements stiff when not in combat?

You’re in luck, it’s only 60 dollars.

Hum…its about your average over the shoulder walking pace, and you can lightly sprint. It doesn’t feel too sluggish, the areas are relatively compact. It’s the combat you might have trouble with

The slowest parts of the game are the detective parts. The entire first hour of the game is pretty slow paced

Wait, there's a melee attack? That should help me out a lot. I didn't know about that. I'm gonna try that first boss again now. Thanks!

Yeah I didn't even know about the shotgun in the store I completely missed it lol. Just dodge his swing when he approaches and bonk his ass if you're out of ammo
