I'm not sure what post of mine you're referring to but my point was probably about consistency. You can be hypocritical about who you sympathize with while still genuinely sympathizing with them. And it's more problematic to side with one of multiple bad actors (which is clearly opportunistic) while claiming morally guided decisions vs siding against simply problematic things like Jim Crow.
Great point. Sympathizing with certain groups far away can be a great way to convince yourself of your goodness while you continue to be complicit in discrimination at home. White liberals do this all the time, and Conservatives do it as well, though in a bit of a different way.
the neocons have made an art of this. I'm amazed at how they suddenly get concerned about kurds or women in iran or shias in pakistan etc. when they need to make an argument about some place

well it depends. the neocons tend to focus on it when they're trying to get something done or make an argument and then drop it. but if someone's been focused on it for a while in a detailed way then yes I'd say that person is probably genuinely concerned in addition to whatever made them focus on the issue

but anyways, the reason i posted this thread is that in the black republican thread i said that the fact that the GOP is more explicitly racist than democrats is simply a data point and wouldnt preclude anything and people had a heart attack
communism and african americans is a blatant example of how people that were advocating against racism had terrible policies that in the long run would not benefit black people
so in the future i would politely ask to please spare me any corny diatribes about progressives and the good white folk of the democratic party and how black people are doomed if we dont support them
