Most of these so-called "Klansmen" are just blue-collar types who were rendered penniless by the collapse of the southern cotton economy during Reconstruction, and who still haven't recovered. Hell, most of them probably voted for William Howard Taft and Teddy Roosevelt. Actual racists are a very, very small part of the Klan and don't have much of a platform. That's what these New York Republicans don't understand. You can't just call every southern Democrat a Klansman. It doesn't work anymore.
