That year was his make or break season and it kept him here. If they would have had their fourth straight 8-8 season or did not make the playoffs at all, there was a high chance that he would have been gone. You usually give contract extensions 1 year before it ends. It tells me that they weren't all in like that themselves.

Currently he now again has two seasons left on his contract. But basically one year. It ends after the 2019 season. If they start out slow, it will get interesting in Dallas and pressure will be high for Garrett.
