And replace him with who? At that point Romo was entrenched into Garrett's offense. Firing Garrett would basically mean starting over. And how many times has a HC been fired who came into the job at the beginning of a franchise QB's career. Romo and Garrett grew at the hip.

And it's why this season will make or break Garrett. Dak is still young so if Garrett gets fired, it won't hurt him too much. Garrett also has very little ties to the roster. Witten was basically the last one. The coaching staff has changed. Garrett and Linehan are on the hot seat whether they know it or not.
I’m not sure who the candidates would have been but it’s telling that they didn’t want to give Garrett a contract until after the 2014 season. That year was his make or break season and it kept him here. If they would have had their fourth straight 8-8 season or did not make the playoffs at all, there was a high chance that he would have been gone. You usually give contract extensions 1 year before it ends. It tells me that they weren't all in like that themselves.

Currently he now again has two seasons left on his contract. But basically one year. It ends after the 2019 season. If they start out slow, it will get interesting in Dallas and pressure will be high for Garrett.
