The woman had mental health issues. The stress of her career and perhaps the treatment she may have received by her superiors and colleagues could have exacerbated her already inherent mental instability into full blown paranoid schizophrenia.
Only rape or self-defense would justify her actions if she was sane. She is not and there seems to be actual evidence to prove this, so she will possibly receive indefinite confinement in a mental hospital. I am not certain that is a better sentence though, since living in a mental hospital with the criminally insane is probably a hell worse than normal prison.
