Of course it's a role. It's still a persona, it's still an act. Some people just can't accept it. Because it's going to ruin everything about wrestling to them. It's still real to them dammit. In the end it's always going to be show business and that's the cold hard facts.
The bottom line of this argument is let them make it own their own merits and stop trying to have them live up to something so massive it's impossible to overcome.

An actor can just move on from a role, play a cop, fireman, criminal, whatever.
Whereas personas follow you.
It's why 50 Cent can't play a fakkit in a movie without nikkaz using it hurting his rap career.
It's why when rappers get beat up or humiliated, it hurts their record sales.
Hell, it's why when wrestlers get buried, it hurts their career.
If it was just a role, there wouldn't be so many people like Muhammad Hassan & Terry Taylor who have their careers ruined by bad gimmicks.
