#1 ranked Jose Benavidez is injured and can't fight.
#2 Adrien Broner is next in line regardless being that he's been ranked #2 for a long time now (loss at Welterweight doesn't matter in Junior Welterweight rankings) and the WBA Super Championship is now vacant.
Only fighters able to fight AB for the belt, in order Of WBA rankings were:
#3 Amir Imam. He was running his mouth, but obviously didn't want this work
#4 Michelle Di Rocco didn't want to come over from Italy to get this work
#5 Khabib Allakhverdiev was the only one willing to face The Problem.
So that's how we got to this fight

He couldve fought AB on October 3rd for the WBA Super Championship (#2 Broner vs #3 Iman since the #1 Benavidez is already out injured) or wait and fight the winner of #1 Matthysse vs #2 Postol (Iman is #3 in both WBC/WBA rankings) sometime next year.
Obviously, his team must've felt the safer bet was option #2 and would rather fight Matthysse than AB
