Adrien Broner Keeps Promise With Media Vow of Silence

Posted by: Jake Donovan on 9/2/2015 .

By Jake Donovan

Everyone thought they caught Adrien Broner in a lie. Just days after swearing off interviews and press conferences until after his October 3 title fight showdown with Khabib Allakhverdiev, it was announced that a kickoff presser was in play for Tuesday at the hosting U.S. Bank Arena in Broner's hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Such a session is pointless if it doesn't include the star of the show. Nobody from Allakhverdiev's team would be on hand—Cincinnati is a long way off from Russia, after all—nor would there be sufficient representation from hosting network Showtime, who will televise the event live, but is currently in the stretch run of promoting the September 12 Pay-Per-View show topped by Floyd Mayweather's showdown with Andre Berto.

That left Broner to do all of the heavy lifting, which meant breaking his self-imposed code of silence.

Or not—at least, save for one word that couldn’t be repeated by his assistant for historical reasons.

Roughly a year after creating a hostile environment during fight week for his eventual 12-round win over Emmanuel Taylor last September, Broner (30-2, 22KOs) literally strolled into the very same venue ahead of Tuesday's press conference. It was also the same venue that saw his very first title win, when he knocked out Vicente Rodriguez in the 3rd round of their Nov. ’11 vacant super featherweight title fight.

He would go on to collect belts at lightweight and welterweight, though has been without a major title since his first career loss, a 12-round decision to Marcos Maidana in Dec. ’13.

The former three-division champ is also coming off of a loss to Porter, but still carries the strut of a man confident that his return to the top of the mountain is all but a given. For this particular occasion Broner arrived dressed in a gray short-sleeve Black-Ownedhoodie—representing a local clothing brand—and black jeans, his face masked by a thick beard and designer sunglasses as he rode through the common area of the U.S. Bank Arena on a red Skywalker electric board.

FightHype.com founder Ben Thompson—based out of the Cincinnati area—
attempted to catch a few words from the former three-division champ . The best he could muster was a promise from Broner for an exclusive somewhere down the road, with the rest of the local media equally turned away in efforts to grab a word or two from the normally quotable boxer.

Aside from his vow of silence, nothing about his appearance suggested anything out of the ordinary. Still, it was enough to leave the media on hand puzzled as to what would come of the session.

Broner eventually provided that answer:White Ticket.

In addition to formally announcing the Showtime-televised evening, the press session also served as Ground Zero for the official launching of About Billions Promotions, the first part coming from Broner's well-documented nickname.

Included among the ABP staff is Brendan Fogel, a gentleman in his mid-20's who serves as Broner's “left hand man”/personal assistant. Better known to the community as "White Ticket,” his normal day-to-day is spent serving as Broner's get-(stuff)-done guy.

On this particular day, he was given a new job description to add to his growing resume: translator.

“I know what y'all are thinking right now—who's this John B. looking muthaf***a, and what's he doing at the podium when they called Adrien to talk,” Fogel acknowledged in addressing the moderately-sized media on hand.

Draped in a red long-sleeve plaid shirt, rope chain around his neck and Ray-Bans covering a decent portion of his pale face, he proceeded to explain exactly why he was behind the mic rather than his far more famous employer.

“Earlier last week, Adrien got into a Meek Mill Twitter rant with ESPN reporter Dan Rafael. Adrien promised the fans and to himself that he would not speak at this press conference or do any interviews until after he wins the title on October 3.

“That may be shocking to hear because people know how much Adrien loves to talk, especially at press conferences.”

The incident to which Fogel references was a brief back-and-forth argument over an article questioning the validity of the title at stake, and how two fighters coming off of a loss can contend for such honors.

Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9KOs) hasn’t fought since losing his title to Jessie Vargas last April. The showdown with Broner will mark nearly 18 months between fights. He was forced to withdraw from a fight last December due to illness, saw another fight canceled and was left to sort out issues with Vlad Hryunov, from whom he was going to split before a reconciliation upon present business at hand.

Meanwhile, Broner was outpointed by Shawn Porter over 12 rounds in their clash this past June, which came outside of the parameters of the super lightweight division, at a maximum catchweight of 143 lbs. He has won his past three fights as it relates to the 140 lb. division, outpointing Carlos Molina, Taylor, and most recently John Molina in a non-title fight that carried a +/- 1 lb. allowance—Broner weighed 141 lb. for the bout, which served as the very first fight to air under the Premier Boxing Champions(PBC) umbrella upon its March 7 launching on NBC.

After voicing his displeasure over said article and more so the way it was framed in a biting tweet from its author, Broner vowed through his social media account to disconnect from the media until after he wins his fourth title in as many weight classes in October (for the record, nothing was mentioned in the event he doesn’t win the fight and title).

With that came the need for his assistant to properly convey his thoughts.

"Right now, Adrien feels as if his back is up against the wall. No disrespect to anybody in this room, we all know when a...”

An “ahem” preceded a clearing of his throat before he made two more attempts to spit out the scripted copy. Stuck on one particular word, "White Ticket"—his nickname derived from his complexion and ethnic makeup—was forced to have his boss break his self-induced code of silence.

"I know you said you weren't going to talk at this press conference, but I need help with this one word,” Fogel requested of Broner, who hesitantly obliged. Looking down at the paper, Broner read along as his assistant did take three on the line as he helped fill in the blank.

“When a…” Fogel repeated, with Broner jumping in for his contribution to the commentary.

"...N*gga,” Broner stated, allowing Fogel to continue as he made his way back to his seat on stage.

“When he feels like his back is up against the wall, we all know some sh*t is about to go down.”

The segment was found humorous to some, childish to others. Segueing from the latter part, Fogel insisted that October 3 will feature a wiser, grown-up version of the normally outlandish and undisciplined boxing personality that the sport has come to know and love/loathe.

"Adrien is 26 years old now. He isn't the same wild guy he used to be. I mean, he's still the same “A.B.”—About Billions; Always Ballin'; Athletic b*stard.

“In the second part of his career, “A.B.” is going to stand for About Boxing—and more importantly, About Business so he can accommodate the billions.”

It remains to seen how that part plays out. All signs point to intense training sessions, with Broner already boasting a camera-ready physique.

The proof will come on October 3. For the next month, Broner has vowed to not utter a word to the media, leaving White Ticket to serve as the in-between. Come fight night, he will have to speak louder than ever through his actions in the ring if he is to one day punch his ticket to greatness.
